Story behind the story
“I was flipping through Richard Avedon’s book “Portraits” and I stumbled on the portrait series called “The Mission Council”… this photograph is beautiful, and simply composed together as he shot each group individually. There was no retouching then so he had to have one council member from the previous shot stay for the next group shot, and this was how he composited the panoramic photo of the Vietnam Mission Council. I loved the simplicity and sternness of each of the officials and thought to myself how great would it be to do a series of this, using women. So I spoke to Beth Dubin at NEXT Model Management, and she agreed to help out with my project. I also thought it would be wonderful to take individual portraits of the girls, and that’s when Annett (stylist) suggested that we also shoot them in men’s underwear to show their femininity [and] to be able to see the juxtaposition of women in suits.” – Mario Torres
