Egoiste Magazine

Somehow a cover shot by Ellen von Unweerth feels like a step down from Roversi, Avedon and Newton.

I completely agree :( I feel the Keira cover was way too commercial for their liking. They don't need celebs to sell it. Maybe they're scared of competition?

It may be a bit commercial then again there is an underlayer of irony in the image. The way her body language appears and the facial expresson. It's more like a roleplay, a character. On the other hand I can agree that Ellen's approach to the photography may not be suitable for this magazine, considering how raw, natural and minimalistic the images before appear. The cover with Kiera seems more forced, a tad too busy!

This magazine looks really great, Pedro, how many pages this magazine has?

This one (Issue 16) has 250 pages including 80 pages of original ads according to a french newspaper.

Issue n° 16

Model : Vlada Roslyakova
Ph : Julia Fullerton-Batten

Julia Fullerton-Batten captures the energy and movement of Russian model Vlada in these images from her fashion spreads for Egoïste Magazine. Drawing influence from German modern dance choreographer Pina Bausch, Julia brings her imagery and imagination to this shoot. By focusing on the power of wind for inspiration, the juxtaposition of the both stark and lush architecture of London, highlights its effect on objects and the human form. Featuring design houses such as Prada, Jean Paul Gaultier & Dior, the images were styled by Martine de Menthon and ran in black and white, gracing the pages of this large-scale, semi-biennial magazine.

This is Nicole Wisniak, the founder of Egoiste. I really admire what she did, so ahead of her time and entirely on her own terms. Such a large portion of Avedon's better photographs in the 80s & 90s were published in her magazine. Also much like Franca with Steven, she gave him every single cover. She was mentioned briefly in the memoir The Price of Illusion by Joan Juliet Buck. I just thought I should put a face to a name since you might not have seen her.

Miss these kind of magazines. Real collector’s items. Reminds me of the early days of Acne Paper, too…which was obviously inspired by Egoïste.

Plus - Egoïste is such a delicious word…great publication title.

@lookatme I agree completely.

Back in the days there's a real sense of collaboration between an editor and a photographer, the mind behind the page somehow has everything to do with how the visuals will turn out. Avedon was, as I understand it, stuck in a rut working for Vogue. He had to find a different expression as a visual artist to serve his personal ambition and he found his ideal platform in Egoïste and The New Yorker. I'm sure he channeled a bit of her in the pictures as well. Stephanie Seymour unveiling her super bush has to be one her best pictures she's ever done.

Thank you. Such a good read. I would love to know more about Thomas Lenthal actually!
Fabulous Art Director.
Less known than Fabien Baron but as much influential. He is behind all the great Galliano/Nick Knight campaigns for Dior, the Tom Ford/Pilati eras for YSL and a lot of Prada campaigns.
He is also behind one the most popular coffe book probably on earth, the Tom Ford one.
He is married to Victoire de Castellane and he was the Art Director of Glamour Magazine in the early 90’s (The Carine Roitfeld era) and is one of the co-founder of Numero Magazine with Babeth Djian and Jean Yves Le Fur.

He is probably my favorite Art Director and I have always liked his kind of old school gentleman allure.

@Lola701 you have no idea how much your comments have educated me over the years for real
Some of those things I knew, I'd really like to know his work in depth. And together they seem like the most fun and grounded couple in fashion. Every time I see Victoire I smile.

Wisniak is maybe one of the last Editor who has maintained her aura because of her high standards and the respect those who counts in the industry have for her.
In a way, Mastermind of trying to follow her path but I think she is journalist, love of the Art first! I think she elevated Avedon’s work a little bit by publishing photos that weren’t fashion related but spoke more about culture.
