Elizabethan S/S 2006

This season I saw a lot of Elizabethan inspired elements, in particular I liked the neck ruffs and shoulder rolls.

If done subtly...I love this look. Does cross over into Victoriana territory though.
I like the starched ruffle collars...considering making one just to tie around the neck...like a statement neckpiece.

yeah...ironic that it's where the victorian ruffs came from in the first place I must say I dearly love elizabethan clothing - I've made several elizabethan costumes myself, but I really prefer this more in it's own context...somehow I'm not sure how well I like it being translated into modern clothing. I mean it's beautiful, a bit of blackwork stitching here and there, or a bit of tapestry/embroidery... but it could very easily go wrong...

for inspiration's sake, here's one of the historical pieces I've made. (yes, ruff included!)

(btw, good trendspotting ella - to pick this out amongst the sea of victoriana was quite sharp-eyed)

I like it when not too obvious, like in that pic of Lily Cole at YSL.

Could someone define the difference between victorian and elizabethan? At first glance it really looks the same.

I think it's all to do with the materials. Elizabethan high ruffled collars were starched and made of very stiff materials so that they really do stand on end! Puffed sleeves were also very much more exaggerated.

Victorian high necked blouses and ruffled shirts would have been made out of cotton (the material wasn't invented till the late 18th century), muslin with lace detailing. So altogether much softer.

I think the influences that we're seeing on the S/S catwalk is a combination of the two.

Thanks for posting the picture Utopia! The way I see it being translated to modern clothing is by contrasting the dominant neck ruffs with soft, clean fabrics. I'm absolutely crazy about 16th century and the fashions of the time (well, actually about any fashions from about 1200-1950). I love this trend a lot & I hope that we get a wearable version soon soon soon. I'd love some nice shirts with ruffs on.

I like when it's used subtly.. like in the frilly collars or puff sleeves. But, for example, that super-lacy-frilly coat from Balenciaga is a bit much.
