Elle Brazil September 2017 : Alicia Keys

Can't help but roll my eyes every time I see the tricks this woman is pulling, and how people are blindly falling for it. But I like the first cover without her name font. The lack of coverlines make it look like an album cover. Third cover must be the worst one.

The first cover looks good. The third cover is the worst.I think she looks different without make up...

love all the covers. Soooooo much better than vogue brazil

I'm tired of this schtick....

I thought that the no-makeup thing was over...

is this cover timed to coincide with any of Alicia's projects? Seems very random especially as Elle Brazil favours models on the cover. Eager to see how the editorial looks.

Love Alicia and love these covers! Also, the no-makeup thing has been so misunderstood and misinterpreted by the media. Alicia herself has stated that this was never about denouncing makeup completely or starting a "movement". She basically said that she no longer feels obligated to wear makeup in terms of it being a prerequisite for women, particularly in the music and entertainment industry. Makeup and beauty are still things she enjoys but on her own terms. It's the media that's been trying to put her in a box and declare her as anti-makeup, not herself. I don't know what's so difficult to understand about that. She can do whatever she wants.

I don't buy fashion magazines for reality - I have the mirror for that, and my daily dose of it is free of cost.

but she stills appears on fashion covers with little makeup (or no makeup), I thought that fashion was over having Alicia on covers like this, not that Alicia would move past a "phase".

Call me jaded, but my thinking is that if she never waved this dubious flag she wouldn't have gotten all these covers. Without these gimmicks she'd be where she was before. Loads of women follow the same trajectory when it comes to make-up. That's how the 'sans fards' type of edits started. And these are famous women, some more famous than her. They don't fold it into their media interviews as a tool to solicit praise.
Why must Alicia get a cover applauding her for being brave, the voice, whatever, for going without make-up? That's my question directed to the media. To her I would ask why she seems to be knowingly folding this 'misunderstanding' and 'misinterpretation' into her brand as a selling point??????

Thanks for this. For those saying that the media is overselling it by calling her brave, you have to keep in mind that there are many, many woman out there who would never leave the house without makeup, much less sit for a photo shoot. The entertainment industry is based on artifice, and that's fine - that's one of the things that makes it fun. But it's good that she's providing another perspective.

I don't see why people have such an issue with her. She's a beautiful woman who photographs well and these covers are awesome. I'm sold!

There is absolutely nothing new about the no-make up trend in music.
Go back to the 60s and 70s and look at Joan Baez or Joni Mitchell just to name two.
That whole era seemed to reject the old norms and standards of beauty.
I'm more peeved at the continuing multi cover the magazine industry keeps shoving in our faces.
The first or second cover alone would have had more impact.

The thing is that this is not a "special" kind of cover or a gimmick/phase because of Alicia's stance on makeup. It's just Alicia being Alicia. The whole wave flagging thing has been created by the media, not her. I'm repeating myself but she has addressed this countless times saying that this is not a movement or a campaign or even about makeup at the end of the day; it's just her doing what she feels comfortable doing on any given day. I genuinely do not understand why people can't seem to move past this. Like dfl-001 said, it's not new and it's kind of baffling how it still sparks such heated discussion.

again, I'm not saying it s her fault or issue or whatever. I'm surprised that a fashion magazine would style her like this, still. I woud expect it from Rolling Stone for example but from a fashion mag I expect an artist presentation that it's different from a candid.

Fair enough, but there are also a great deal of women who do exactly the opposite. You don't see them booking covers each time, or bringing it up in interviews. So this 'perspective' Alicia appears to be providing {sometimes I use make-up, sometimes I don't} is as rhetorical as 'the sky is blue' and many women has been aware of this freedom before she started flaunting it.

And if the media is to blame, why does she continue to feed into it with her participation? My guess is that she benefits from it as much as they do.

She's wearing makeup.
I see blush, concealer, eyebrow gel, expensive skincare and skillful use of photoshop. The only thing she's not wearing on her face is eye shadow.

The covers themselves are beautiful, the first on in particular.
