i always thought of espadrilles as having a hemp (rope) sole...possibly with a layer of rubber on the bottom...they may or may not have a wedge and they may or may not tie around the ankle...but it's the canvas upper and hemp bottom that qualifies a shoe as an espadrille...as far as i know...
