Established Designers That You Just Don't "get"?

i dont get MJ AT ALL. i find his clothes boring and very much like Gap clothes.

hmm...i never noticed that with dsquared..but that's because i wasn't that interested in their brand...i'll observe more keenly now...
galliano is a strange man to me... i know he's a genius and "saved dior" but he's just a strange, strange man....

Roberto Cavalli - I find most of his designs incredibly vulgar and garish. His catwalk shows are like the annual gathering of whores and hustlers. The male eqivalent of Donatella Versace. BTW, I don't consider her a "designer", so she doesn't even deserve a seprate place in this list. :P

You have to remember, Cavalli was born to an impressionist painter father and a tailor mother. His main goal is to mix art with fashion. Mainly impressionist art. That is the reason for all of the crazy colors, and wild ideas. Because its not really like oh here is a basic peice you can wear with a nice pair of pants its more you can buy one peice and pair it with many plain peices for a juxtaposition of patterns. Anyways i wish mabey that some people, not just you, would simply do research before bashing a designer for trying to be creative that is all.

 What a bunch of bulls**t. You think just because he was born of a painter and a tailor the vulgar trash he produces is somehow automatically justified? Trash is trash, does not matter where it came from or what it was influenced by.

actually I like gallianos ss05 collection for men... all the guys look like johnny depp =D

I agree. His clothes aren't really geared toward anybody but rich socialites or socialite-wannabe's with an extremely snobbishly conservative wardrobe. It's really like a higher end St. John by Marie Gray, really.

YES! Thanks Scott for articulating it so much better than I did...that is exactly what I was thinking, it's basically St. John but priced for the high roller crowd...colors, shapes, everything about the pieces doesn't seem particularly flattering or striking...it seems like a remnant of 80's excess in the conservative world of rich folks.

Yep yep yep.

I'm not sure I see what's not to get about Yohji and Hedi.

Well, maybe Yohji's men's stuff is different ... but look at the women's S/S 06 ... between the garden hoses and the dragon/dinosaur dress and the camo, I certainly wouldn't call it wearable ... I don't see spiritual either ... although if I had to wear it I would certainly be trying to get in touch with a higher power

Well,I have to agree about the Hedi thing, really. Although,he's finally starting to come into his own just a bit again, the majority of his success over the last few years was being able to capitalise on what Raf Simons was doing long ago before anybody knew how to pronounce Hedi  Sadly,it took Raf a long time before he was able to really garner much acclaim....all of which that happened after the Hedi hype.

I agree with Orochian about Cavalli.

i wish i'd get it, but i just don't get Valentino. the only one i kind of mildly like was the Julia Roberts Oscar dress and even that didn't fit her propertly. It looked kind of stiff.

Tom Ford. Anything he ever made, for gucci, ysl, whatever.

...*deep breath* what a relief B)

i have to agree. so many designers out there just use sex and media hype to sell their products. i agree donatella versace is no designer at all... i have to say that i like hedi, but it's true what he's doing isn't really as original as they say.
But you know what/who annoys me more than any of those other designers? tommy hilfiger. ARRRRRGH... 'nuff said

Hedi Slimane for Dior Homme. There, I've said it

OMG.....It isn't just me......someone else sees it (or, more to the point, doesn't see it) too!

How much does it cost to build that kind of hype?

It certainly costs a lot - all the advertising - which bringsthem more money But I guess they put it all back in even more advertising, and champagne with Peter Doherty (heard today that Dohertyshameless is about to embark on fashion design. C'm on, doesn anyone takes this circus serous?

 don't let the groupies lynch you.

I'm ready. Before they get a chance to get out their lynching ropes I'll show them my stuff by Raf and Ann (and make them touch it too!). Exit is straight on lads.:innocent:

Dior Homme was pretty good at the start of the label, especially the debut F/W 2001, S/S 2002 and S/S 2003 were fabulous and utterly different in the making than Raf and Ann... not better but different... HOWEVER, all the collections from F/W 2004 on didn´t deserve the rave reviews, the collections were okay, there were some nice pieces to wear for sure but it wasn´t avant garde at all. As said in a lot of comments before, it was basically the same gear that he saw artists and fans wearing...
