In her two decades of non-stop modeling, EVA HERZIGOVA has learned the true meaning of transformation. Wearing the new season’s 16 closet-updating essentials, she tells HARRIET QUICK about what it means to have staying power.

On entering The Phoenix, a cozy pub tucked down a London side street, Eva Herzigova surreptitiously surveys the scene with luminous gray-blue eyes. As the 6ft figure slinks through the bar in a long navy Valentino coat, heads turn. A group of blond women in sheepskin coats sip white wine in one corner, while a gentleman in a sports jacket reads the paper in another. “These might be my new neighbors,” says Herzigova, winking.

The model and her partner, Italian fashion magnate Gregorio Marsiaj, are currently renovating a house in the neighborhood to live in with their three boys, George, Philipe and Edward (aged seven, three and one). It is just one project in Herzigova’s endlessly interweaving workload of shoots, interviews, launches, shows and motherhood. “I am a perfectionist but you have to give that up as a parent,” she sighs. “It goes out the window if you want to handle life.”

She seems totally at home in this persona of a mother with her hands full. Yet, like the true chameleon every great model is, on this bitterly cold January day, with her tousled blond hair, pale skin and ballet dancer’s posture, Herzigova looks otherworldly. The Czech-born multilingual supermodel is wearing a tweed midi skirt, a sweater and black loafers, though says she usually favors Katharine Hepburn’s style of tailored pants and a jacket. “I like essentials with something different about them,” she muses, “but not so strong that they go out of fashion. I have a lot of cashmere sweaters – too many.”

Despite the fact that Herzigova has probably seen more changes of clothes than most women would in two lifetimes, she maintains a keen interest in style. On The EDIT’s shoot, she fell for the pale-pink silk duster coat and dress by Stella McCartney. “It felt like wearing bed sheets, the way the silk moved,” the model enthuses.

After more than two decades in the business, it is unsurprising that Herzigova counts some of its most prestigious figures as good friends – John Galliano, Azzedine Alaïa, Nicolas Ghesquière and Karl Lagerfeld among them. “I saw Alexis Roche’s images of John’s debut for Maison Margiela. Those red dresses with amazing back movement and detail looked beautiful. John would always have a story and characters. It was continuous daydreaming in a way,” she says of modeling in his fantastical shows. “He’s very kind and sweet and I loved having fun and jokes with him.”

In front of the camera, and irrespective of her 41 years, Herzigova plays myriad roles; from sunny ‘outdoor girl’ to leonine-like sexual predator and glamorous siren. The combination of those cheekbones, wide-set eyes and high-lipped smile is magnetic. “A young photographer recently said to me: ‘You are so versatile and yet so you,’” she smiles. “I lock myself into some part of my imagination and don’t realize what goes on. I stay there, disappear into it, and then get out of it.”

Herzigova, like her peers Helena Christensen, Claudia Schiffer, Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell, has the skills and genes necessary for reinvention – the secret to a long modeling career. Hers began when she left her small hometown of Litvínov for Paris, aged 16. A 12-year stint in New York followed, until life took a different turn. “My life became more than just about a career,” she explains. “Everything in New York is very work-centric and you can’t escape that. It’s the New York mentality and it’s great – when you want it.”

The first 10 years of her career saw Herzigova come to preeminence in the ‘pin-up’ world, modeling for GQ, Pirelli, Victoria’s Secret and that infamous Wonderbra ad, in highly sexual images. Back then, few faces transitioned between the two worlds. It was when Mario Testino and Carine Roitfeld shot her for The Face in 1997, showing her butchering meat in an apron and lingerie, that her star began to rise. The next ten years were dominated by high-fashion work, with shows and campaigns for Prada, Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Dolce & Gabbana. Today sees her working on a mix of editorial and commercial jobs, as well as being a face for Dior beauty. “It’s fantastic. I never thought I could continue this job at this pace,” she says. “It’s an empowering message to see older women in fashion – Joan Didion in the Céline campaign, Julia Roberts for Givenchy... Gorgeous people who don’t look done. It’s a lovely message.”

Natural beauty then, is her mantra. “I have always had a healthy concept that what you eat is who you are, and I’ve been preserving myself in that way. I’m not extreme in anything.”

Her good eating habits were set in childhood, says Herzigova. “The quality of life we had was amazing. We would go to the woods to pick blueberries – everything was seasonal,” she says. “Today, I don’t think [children] can have that peace, that quality of life – the world has changed.” With Marsiaj, she works hard to instill values into their three boys. “Giving your best in everything; independence; being kind, not perfect,” she says, listing her priorities. “My favorite thing in the world is when the boys crawl into our bed in the morning. That moment with all of us, half sleepy with hair sticking up, together.”

It’s the perfect note for Herzigova to make her exit, with precious family calling. Flashing that ever-gracious, twinkling-eyed smile, she heads off, ready to embrace her latest role.

awesome!! congrats Eva!

question: when was the last time Eva did any work in the USA? it's been a looooong time, i think.

Well, I would say she did few but I agree, not enough !
Last september (and fall) she had this huge campaign "Altuzarra for Target". Printed ads in magazines (Vogue US, Harper's Bazaar) + TV ad + photos in all Target shops which are all over the country. It was quite something !
But concerning editos, it is now rare. In 2014 she was part of the first Harper's Bazaar US edito by Carine Roitfeld (with a bad photo I must say).
