(question --> what does the "ova" mean in the last names? is it the equivalent to "Mac" or "Mc" in scottish names, meaning "son of")

The "ova" is a part of women's surenames - every woman surename is ending -ova: e. i. man is Novak and women form is Novakova,
Eva's father's (or brother's/uncle's) name is Herzig, Karolina's father is Kurka etc.
It's just grammaticaly to recognize if you speak about man or woman
If you say Smith in English you don't know it...
