I got a brochure the other day from my friend who's taking Jewellery design in the UK...

This is Betty Pepper's work, a recent graduate.

There is also the Scottish Scott Stephen
Since August 2005, his jewellery work is featured in Dries van Noten's flagship shop in Belgium. Scott was originally a textile designer:p

You can also watch a video of him at FashionFile. It's the 4th video link from the top. You'll be able to see how he incorporates the textiles into the jewellery.

You guys can post some fabric/textile jewellery too:lol:

I heard this is also a trend now?? I read an article saying it's getting popular with the celebrities too (ie. Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen).

Does anyone know if there is a particular time period that can be attributed to fabric jewellery? Some of the designs look maybe 1960/70...

I don't know about the brooches--they look kind of like popcorn kernels--
but the belt is surely made of hemp/cord

Jewelry
Printed fabric or paper images can be used to create unique adornments. Diminutive metal frames can encase a small image. Attached to a length of ribbon it makes a unique necklace or when backed with a pin an eye-catching brooch. Small fabric images can be cut into shapes, sewn to a fabric backing, and stuffed to make dimensional jewelry.

Don't forget about age-old decoupage. Adhere a fabric or paper image to just about any small surface and finish with several coats of decoupage medium (sand after each coat has dried). Attach to a pin or necklace.

What a great thread,indeed....and lovely of you to point this approach out. But I feel that it's more rare than trendy. I think it's extremely fresh and new.

In my one-off pieces I recycle, exclusively, fabrics. I would love to try incorporating metals but I would think one would need a really strong gauge-like thread. I don't know if it's something I'm keen on. With fabric one can experiment a bit better...with shape and even intricacy. Fabric jewellery can almost like detachable embroidery.

There's a couple designers I've posted on tFS before who uses mostly fabrics-Ambriel Floyd,Sandra Ernst...and also Susan Cianciolo does this too. Ninh Wysocan does brilliant abstract crochet pieces.

i love crochet jewellery, thanks for posting gius and estella!, i think the work at marni is extremely inspiring.

I'm so glad to see this thread's finally been noticed :D

Thank you Scott for mentioning the other artists! I was just looking at ninh Wysocan's work just now (http://www.thefashionspot.com/forums/f60/ninh-wysocan-33588.html)--they are really nice! There's such a contrast between her textile pieces and the ones posted here.
I also think I saw some of your pieces at the jewellery thread. I think they may have been posted by Lena. Anyway yours is so interesting too in the mixture of textures and colours. I like also how yours (and Ninh's) can be worn well on a male or female...
I hope it's not too off-topic, but I read in the thread for Susan Cianciolo, you wrote she does not design exclusively anymore. Did you mean she doesn't create pieces individually for clients anymore?

I've made some things mixing fabric with other materials,,
but this time I"ll try to do something 100% textile. And I'll post it when I'm finished! :flower:

Hi gius...thanks for the kind compliments(here and on my profile!). Regarding,Susan...when I posted she wasn't but she's started doing a small capsule collection which she's selling mainly in NY and Japan.

I'm so glad you located some of Wysocan and Floyd's work. I love this piece you found. It's actually one I have never seen before....just beautiful! Yeah,Ninh is such an innovator as far jewellery is concerned at the moment. Especially, being that she does work primarily with textiles-she does work with stones too but I think her textiles are extraordinary. As for mine...I like to keep that at the fore of my mind, besides the actual stuff I'm working round....that unisex element. I try to incorporate enough heaviness so it wouldn't isolate the individuality aspects. Because that's really what I want them to be for. Plus,it's also part of my own personality.

Thanks for this FAB thread .. =)
is there any online source for them to buy??

holy moly...BETTY PEPPER...*must remember that name....
LOVE the first stuff posted...
:woot:

what a great topic...can't believe i just found it!!...

i have a FANTASTIC pin from marni that is all twisted fabric and knots......

and lanvin uses lots of tulle in their accessories...
also did the fabric covered pearls...which H&M totally knocked off...
