fabrics for spring 06

I work on developing fabrics for the mass market. Anyone have any ideas as what fabrics will strong for spring 06?

Am feeling for tons of washed cottons, voiles, metallics, broderie anglaise, checked fabrics etc...

Do you agree and what am I missing?

First of all, I disagree with almost all of the items in your list.....

I think fabrics that will mostly be in vogue are cotton with horizontal black stripes, silk, lace, raw denim, raw cotton, soft cotton...... But I think a lot of tissues will be a lot thicker, in a raw-ish way..

For SS'06... to me i feel that it will be Light soft cotton jerseys, 93%cotton 7%spandex, denim with different wash, varies kind of Gmt-wash fabrics...

I dont disagree with you, but I still think there is room for the fabrics I originally suggested as well, as the feminine look will still be strong, hence broderie anglaise and embroideries etc... On the other end of the spectrum is the tailored more mannish look...

I do agree with your feeling for raw cottons etc.. especially thick slubs, like the Dupion silks that are around now.

Just wondering Karen..if you work in the industry, surely you already know what will be popular for ss06? You'll have seen all the fabrics at PV and seen the trend forecasts - or do you wait to see what will be shown on the catwalks and then get the fabrics produced for the mass-market to copy the trends?

Hi Stylista,
There are lots of fabrics that are popular at the likes of PV etc but as the season nears, some become more important than others, and these end up by being the ones everyone wants.. I cant wait for the catwalks for spring 06 to produce fabrics as this doesnt give me enough time. And as you know things change so fast in this industry hence my question as to what everyone thinks about the main fabrics for spring 06.Hope this answers your questions!

karen, all the fabrics mentioned where already hot for ss05 and on PV's forums for ss06
if you are with a mass production house, i think its safe to keep on working with them.

like bleedoll said, jerseys are uber hot, but in my book it seems that non spandex feather light knits is where interest holds most, both for rayon/viscose and cotton qualities.
raised/uneven surfaces should keep strong..
i can also see lots of voile but in linen (since cotton is been already used to death for ss05)

n0t too sure of metallics , they seem a bit tired by now, but i can see coatings and lots of them..
perforated finishings (eyelets etc) should also hold well as 'nouveaute'
i think we will see a decline in prints and more interest in coating decorations but this is for 'advanced' trends..

reworked minimalistic monochromes should be emerging as key qualities
on the retro trip i'd say more retro geometrics (50's) and less florals.. when floral, i see either tiny 'romantic' turn of the century Liberty influences in vintage shades or overblown florals in huge scale, reaching the abstract..

gosh, i can go on forever..
btw, cant wait for fw06.07 at the end of Sept, praying to be able to visit PV running on a very tight schedule for Sept..

i work for an international textiles agent, and i have been seeing a lot of washed cottons, stressing, etc, but for fall 06, i have noticed a lot of velvets, jacquards...everything is sort of reminiscent of the early 90s...

jacquards are supposed to get huge, they fall to the 'uneven surface' fabric trend

Hi Lena,

Am based in London.Agree with you about the very lightweight fabrics, both in knits and in wovens. When I said metallics, perhaps what I should have said is foil prints have seen lots of voiles and linens with all over foil prints and it looks new and pretty effective.

foils (either metallic or mat) are big already, you are so right karen

actually all kinds of coatings are on the rise, mark my words.. with the rise of 'neo minimalism' they will somehow replace prints and yes, they do feel 'fresh'

Well put Lena. speaking of the metallic foils, feel stronger for gold than silver (for the 1st time in years)noticed that all the bags, belts etc.. have touches of " old gold" and looking at the jewellery, although silver is still a basic, gold looks fresher especially as it sits better with all the creams, browns and neutral familes...

I quite like the idea of metallics as a spring, and not a fall textile trend additionally but obviously not full on...lightweight fabrics are always going to be big in spring as they are practical....and while i don't doubt jersey will be big (it has been for awhile non?) it looks completely heinous on me and i find it a fall fabric, so will avoid
