She's actually not even that popular in China. She's A-list, but definitely not the top of A-list. She does a few movies a year but they tend not to be very noteworthy. I would say she's best known for a supporting role in an extremely popular TV drama that aired in the 90s, but I guess that's subjective.

I don't quite get what you mean by unofficial rep. Would America have an unofficial rep?

A lot of profiles seem to emphasize her (and other actresses) promoting the Chinese film industry. That's what I mean. It's interesting though that she is not that popular in the country, and yet, she is very effective as a red carpet star.
