Fantastic Man #32 F/W 2020.21 : Riz Ahmed by Mark Peckmezian

I know. I was reading the same article. But the point he’s trying to make is so much more than just that statement.

I think he tried to use an extreme in order to bring attention to the issue and it backfired, when in actual fact the effect would have been the same if not better had he just said that the youth would feel alienated from Engish culture if poor diversity continued.

Oh OK— he's not pretentious… just glaringly ignorant and racist. I can’t imagine someone saying that a lack of Brown representation in entertainment will drive the kidz to ISIS. That’s such an offensive statement to make about a people. God— him and John Boyega would be perfect for each other since they can marinate in their ignorant, racist aura.

Are you making this bold statement solely based on Benn’s comment, or have you actually looked up what Riz has said on the subject of representation? Just curious.

But he did make this statement…??? Or were you looking for deflection?

Riz made a hyperbolic statement that completely undermines whatever poignant point he may had made. It absolutely undermines the Muslim population as volatile savages that need to be carefully appeased if the Western population doesn’t want violent conflict. It’s fear-mongering, and no different than what certain politicians resort to. But somehow it’s applauded and supported because Riz is a Brown man while if someone like Trump made such a fear-mongering statement, he would be immediately shut down. Fear-mongeringn is fear-mongering— just like racism is racism no matter the race of the perpetuator. Once there’s a political leniency afforded to certain peoples (for whatever past trespasses that their forefathers suffered), then it becomes inequality, with resentment and division surely to develops from those at the receiving end of inequality. Treat everybody as you’d like to be treated. Why is that so hard for some to accept???

Speaking of previews, here is a video preview of the issue.

I loathe the design, layout, and font they have chosen since their revamp, but at least they had a bit more "fashion" in this issue (and I use that term loosely). I got their Greece issue and it was like a weak imitation of Holiday Magazine.

Sure, a statement like that may push some buttons. But what’s wrong with that. And does a statement like that really undermine the Muslim population as volatile savages? That also a rather hyperbolic implication. And calling him an ignorant racist because a statement like that is...well, rather ignorant if you ask me. But in the end I don’t think we will ever agree on subjects like this. So let’s agree to disagree and leave it at that.

Let’s talk about magazines! Thanks for the preview Yassous. Doesn’t look promising at all.

Preview looks as unappealing as the cover. Sigh.

Hadn't heard of his ISIS comment previously. I think his point that lack of representation leads to alienation and resentment which can make one susceptible to seeking acceptance/belonging in the wrong places is well taken. I think him using ISIS as an example was a poor choice, obviously. For one thing, the vast majority of victims of the mass murders and rapes and destruction carried by ISIS are other residents of countries where ISIS did/does have real power, so it feels odd/simplistic to frame ISIS as a reaction against 1st world problems in the UK. For another, I can see that the implication that lack of diversity in entertainment would be enough to turn a Muslim into a murderous extremist is rather insulting.

^^^ You know, those that end up joining extreme groups— whether they be ISIS or a White supremacist group likely feel entitled to their bigoted beliefs, with no desire for equality. Had these types been successful in the mainstream, they’d likely spread their bigoted beliefs anyway. As if someone who joins ISIS would believe in equal rights for every single individual, let alone be supportive of women’s/LGBT equality. So he's absolutely irresponsible for making such a statement.

Good luck attempting to find some solid sighs of fashion productions in these rags nowadays LOL They’re all grandstanding for social/political issues to beg for twitter-mob approval.. A lively discussion around here is a good sign we’re still alive and kicking and thinking for ourselves rather than just another echo chamber. So I appreciate your response, mike— even if we disagree.
