Who here goes to fashion weeks around the world on a regular basis? What is your take on best and worst places, surprises, disapointments, layout of shows, pr firms, quality of shows, models, etc?
Here are my notes of various fashion weeks I attand on a regular basis.
Sao Paulo Brazil Fashion Week - My favorite fashion week of all - Brazilians take fashion very seriously and fashion week shows this off - the venue is the size of a shopping mall - with stores boutquesa resturaunts and mini tv studios inside the venue - the designers are amazing - and under rated IMO - the models are the best ive seen. Cant wait to go back in June. Love it!
NYC Fashion Week - My second favorite - well organized - shows are hit and miss - but overall its a good time - great parties - PR frims are easy to work with - access is easy - they just need to bring some of the better designers to the tents - sponsorship maybe - the shows have gotten too commercial - I am sick of JLo, Oakley, etc. etc. - Its becomeing a venue of people who have the money to show not necissarily the talent.
LA Fashion Week - My hometown, lots of celebs, not many great designers and models. Easy venue - most shows are in 3 tents at smashbox studios and run by 7th on sixth - has the feel of NYC Fashion week just a bit smaller. I think LA is the best place to start as a young designer. Easy access to fabric and cheap labor, lots of press coverage and access to get your clothes on celebs pretty easily.
London Fashion Week - Another well organized event - well run and easy to get from show to show - great new designers - great models - expensive accomidations and food - I like to go for 2-33 days and leave.
Paris Fashion Week - The biggest and best show in Paris - the shows at the lourve are great and easy to get in and out of - the shuttles help out but I have missed many shows trying to find them and due to poor organization - some of the PR firms are great some are lousy - mode a paris the board running the show is pretty aweful also - overall the best shows makeup for the messyness - Paris fashion week is not about french fashion - more about people who want to associate themselves with paris and its history.
Milan Fashion Week - The messiest of all the weeks - shows are all over the city - you really have to know your way around before you attempt to hop from show to show - the PR firms are hit and miss also, the big ones are just outright rude, people dress up for Milan much more than any other fashion week and the front row looks as good as he catwalk - great designers and models - definately a favorite - I always leave camera national with 100lbs in free magazines - then rip them up in the hotel and take back 5lbs in tears.
I hope this helps - if you want to know any details about any of these weeks let me know. =)
