kristen morgin, a sculptor from long beach, california.
she makes life-size sculptures of cellos, cars, horses, pianos, tea cups, that all look as if they've been lost in shipwrecks and have decomposed almost beyond recognition. they are absolutely beautiful and look like they'll crumble if you even look at them...their frailty is what draws me to them.
the sculptors of the Kailasa Temple in India. 8th or 9th century
the largest monolithic structure in the world, carved top-down from a single rock. It covers twice the area of the Parthenon in Athens and is 1.5 times high, and it entailed removing 200,000 tonnes of rock. It is believed to have taken 7,000 labourers reputedly using 1" chisels over the course of 150 years to complete the project.
I'm a sucker for classical sculpture, so I choose Bernini, I love his grasp of anatomy and emotion. I think this is St. Teresa in Ecstacy. If I remember correctly it is marble, stone and bronze and other things.
