French Style!

there's not that much people wearing furs in Paris... at least not more than in any other european capital... regarding france, I don't think furs are a essencial part of the parisian-french style...

I agree with you both about the use of furs.

I don't remeber my comments on this thread but after a while (living and not living in france, but still enjoying french culture), I think the (what it's called) "french style" is a bit overrated when nowadays styles travelled within countries and continents and you find similar patterns here, in USA, in Japan or in Russia.

I agree...I recently moved to Paris, and I've found that generally speaking, there were many more stylish and well-dressed people back home in Tokyo than in Paris. Mostly I see shabby ill-fitting black coats and old boots everywhere...which would be a rare sight in Tokyo. Not that one is better than the other, it's just something I noticed. I kind of miss the creativeness, to be honest, but I also like that there is less emphasis on looking like a magazine editorial.

who do you think hast this "french chic" style, effortless, chic vibe...?

i mean, which celebrities, models, maybe bloggers?

Clemence Poesy to me is the epitome of the modern French style. She is so classy, dresses impeccably and always appears to never be wearing makeup yet she still glows. These are three things which make a certain women seem utterly and quintessentially French!

that was the first name that came to my mind as well

I think the french must have a natural critical eye that is just ingrained in them...so its built in and there from birth ahaha

I spose its how youre brought up and what styles you see around you (most of the time)!

I really do not get this obsession about french style...
It is not that amazing.
Sometimes it looks like that woman who is french act like she dresses better than anyone just because she is french.
this is just one thing I have noticed.
They can look great but I have definetly seen many better outfits than some french woman in Chanel....
Also, I am sick and tiared of phrase: PARISIAN CHIC.

And yes, I like people from french (for example I adore Audrey Tatou) but I think this whole french style is so overrated.

The funny thing is that a lot of the blogs I look at with Paris street fashion - the women and girls all seem to be be wearing american brands/looks - converse shoes, ray ban sunglasses (on everyone!) worn with boots, skinny jeans, dark colors and lots of scarves. That seems to be the uniform. "Chic" Parisians all seem to dress the same. I find NYC women more fashionable - more risks and creativity, but I do love to see a classic french look from time to time.

I agree with this. It's the same thing with models' style. Yes, the off-duty models look nice, but (just like with Parisian style) after looking through a lot of pictures, it's repetitive. With a few exceptions, they all look like their outfits were pumped out of a factory and there's a total lack of imagination. And NY/LON--and even Japanese--street style is far more hit or miss, but the hits are really out of the park. That said, I think there's something to admire about both the consistency of Parisian style and the eccentricity found at the other fashion capitols. I just wish the French would stop being put on a pedestal for their style when it's neither innovative or nearly as mystifying as the fifteen million HOW TO LOOK LIKE A FRENCH WOMAN!!11~ books and articles make it out to be. And, if anything, the way of dress in Paris has much more to do with women being raised to take a certain approach to shopping than it does with any magical pixie style dust the gods saw fit to sprinkle over the country.

I love France (and not just Paris), but in the times I've been there, I've never seen this mythical chic that people rave about. There are chic women here and there, but you could make that argument for lots of cities worldwide - it's not exclusive to France, or Paris.

But there are a lot of great French labels that sell the kind of simple chic clothing that seems so hard to find elsewhere - Vanessa Bruno, Isabel Marant (though her recent collections are questionable), Comptoir de Cotonniers, APC, Maje, Sandro. Maybe the image of these brands contribute to the myth. Not to mention the Vogue Paris staffers. And the fact that Paris is so photogenic and there are a lot of great French fashion icons in film and music. And the legend of Coco Chanel herself.

All this doesn't mean the women there on the streets dress better though. It just adds up to a rather chic image. I guess it's just convenient to refer to it as French chic instead of having to explain it.

I live in Paris and I don't agree with this at all. While yes, there is a lot of uniformity, I think overall Parisian women dress very well. They are often very subtle with style, but in general they get the whole package right (hair, make up, shoes, bag etc) For many women here, it is all about the small details, not the overt. That said, it really depends which area you are in. When a Parisian woman gets it right, she gets it so right it usually eclipses everyone around her.

Personally, I love the Parisian style, but then again I also love the style in London and new York too.

:D Yes, I agree. The simplicity is what works best for Parisian women and what they do so well.

when i was in paris this past summer i was struck by a sort of...gypsy influence i found everywhere - the whole big loose cotton scarf around the neck is one example. i couldn't quite put my finger on it but i felt this pull, this quiet influence on me away from my impulse toward more ... structured, controlled styles.

I like French style to a certain extent. I admire the simplicity of the the style, but I've noticed that a lot of French women like to wear things that are ill-fitting and loose (or maybe it's just the pictures I've seen of French style), and they usually don't try to balance it out with anything a bit more tailored. I favor New York/Upper East Side style much more.
