To be honest thats also my first association when those two coloures are combined.. .

To me the real don't would be letting that stop you from wearing it though.

^ I always through of IKEA as more a bright, royal blue and bright yellow. I guess because it's also not prevalent where I live, I don't really think of it, even when I see those exact colors.

But Ines says navy blue and yellow - there's thousands of shade of yellow. I don't think it's going to conjure IKEA immediately. And like you said, even if it did, why does that make it a "don't"? She's very anti-rules in her book, like matching your purse and shoes, but then sets down these arbitrary rules.

I have also heard no one in France dresses well, is thin, takes care of their skin, etc, all the common stereotypes.

Didn't it used to be a traditional aspect of a woman's maturity in years - to eventually turn to furs and fine jewellery all the more? Having said that, I recently read 'A Guide To Elegance' which left me even more baffled

• No chiffon print dresses with ballet flats (wear biker boots).
• Don't wear navy blue and yellow together.
• Don't wear earrings and a necklace at the same time, you can only have one.
• Women over 40 should not wear fur.
• No leggings.

But to be honest, from my point of view/not very funky style, I do think French girls are superior to at least their British counter part now that I live in London. Here in London you just know when a girl is east European/French/British etc.. And I think not living in Paris/France gave me a better appreciation for French women's style

And taking care of your skin from a young age is not a myth and we all start before we hit puberty. At least in my circle of friends/former schools that's how it worked. That way you get a regimen in place before things start to get really messy..

It's been a while since I've been to France (or anywhere for that matter. .) but I rediscovered French fashion here in my little apartment recently. 2020 was a bad time on so many levels and for me, it was also a year of poor fashion choices. After a half day of work, I cleared out about a 1/3rd of my closet (charity, repurposed to rags, a few pieces to TRR). There was a much clear picture of what was loved, wanted, and needed! It was transformational to locate so many unwanted and unworn things as well. A few things I removed simply because those purchases were too strong of a reminder of the early period of COVID-19. Strange how a pajama set can bring back uncertainty, anxiety, and feelings of despair that suddenly become lighter with an item gone.

If anyone is interested, I will post a full list of additions, but main pieces found missing from my wardrobe were a pair of business casual pants and a bright top! I brought in these pants from Boyish and this floral print top from Sezane (to stay very French in the process )

^ So interesting about anxiety being tied to clothes! I have had the experience of unpleasant associations ... but more so with places where something terrible happened (like a restaurant) rather than what I was wearing. My grandmother refused to buy a new dress for my grandfather's funeral, and I suspect this was why ... permanent negative associations, and she'd never be able to wear it again--except for her own funeral!

I recently wore my coral pink Vivier espadrilles with toning coral pink jeans and a black eyelet top. I wouldn't really say it was French style, but it was fun to throw a French item into the mix! Birkenstocks have been my pandemic shoe of choice, but one can't really accuse them of being chic.

I admire the relaxed air of the French girls I see in fashion, but it's interesting to see how that image has shifted over the 00s-10s as we move from blogger era (people like Alix Bancourt of Cherry Blossom Girl and Louise Ebel of Miss Pandora - very girly, unafraid of frills and details, wear colour) to the "French Girl As Instagram Brand" era of Damas/Socol/Mais (very late 60s-70s Jane Birkin template, wear jeans all the time, shoes are some kind of boot or block heel or espadrille, maybe a little red top or dress and some lipstick if they're feeling really bold, image is "effortlessly sexy" and probably don't wear a bra ever).
