NEW YORK (Reuters) - Clothing retailer Gap Inc. will consider selling designer or co-branded apparel at its stores, a break from its current practice of carrying only Gap-labeled merchandise, a company executive said on Tuesday.
"Our job is to bring the best assortment to our customers," Gap Brand President Cynthia Harriss said at the Piper Jaffray consumer conference in New York. "We'd be open to it."
Harriss added that the idea of working with known designers is one of several Gap is considering to boost results as it works to pull itself up from months of slumping sales.
Gap already plans to offer Converse shoes at its stores and the company will also sell African-made, vintage-style T-shirts in conjunction with Project Red, an initiative backed by Bono of the band U2, which is designed to raise awareness and funds for fighting AIDS in Africa.

Gap is a unit of Gap Inc. which also owns the Banana Republic and Old Navy apparel chains.
Swedish fashion retailer Hennes & Mauritz AB is already well known for its collaborations with known designers including Viktor & Rolf and Stella McCartney.
