John Galliano´s Spring/Summer 1997 show for Givenchy was presented at Paris Fashion Week and was titled ‘Jane Austen Goes to Marrakech’. Galliano displayed a contrast between feminine and modern tailoring, revealing slip dresses under structured jackets, dramatic lace, and sheer shirt dresses with Victorian-inspired jackets against elements like extravagant Edwardian hats and umbrellas. Models slowly paraded the catwalk; a long, wide, deep red carpet that brought to mind a lavish traveller seen through the mind of Galliano’s beloved glamour. The colour palette consisted mainly of black and white, broken with flashes of red and touches of lilac and sage green, featuring prints such as polka dots, stripes, florals and leopards. Gold and beaded bags and gold, silver, and black strappy sandals complimented Medusa-like hairstyles with bold colours were worn alongside heavy applications of English rose-style makeup, painted under Moroccan henna tattoos which spread to the model’s bodies.
