'Gothic' Style

I think goth in it´s most obvious, opulently embellished sense (á la gothic lolita/victoriana) is pretty hard to pull off for those that are not fragile looking (therefor I guess it´s a look that should be better kept by the japanese girls, if we are speaking of a total look). I´ve been to Harajuku, Takeshita Dori (the street in which you find most of the gothic lolitas hanging around apart from Yoyogi) once and for me it´s like looking at Galliano/McQueen/... clothes or costume exhibitions - nice to take away some ideas but nothing I´d actually consider wearing 1:1.

Apart from that infamous F/W 02 Gucci collection, I was pretty surprised nobody mentioned Rochas/Olivier Theyskens before... it´s so obvious with all the delicate Chantilly lace, structured evening gowns/bustiers and Tailleurs. I think a lot of people can´t imagine the look torn apart into separate pieces but it could be a fantastic for a certain girl/woman that wants to look a little goth - just a jacket, a pair of ellbow length gloves, or a bustier with a black cardigan on top, worn with black skinny trousers/jeans... just have a look on that picture with Stella sporting one of Olivier´s jackets with a t-shirt, black skinny jeans and some pumps... fabulous!

I totally agree with the pieces you picked out, softgrey: That Jil Sander babydoll dress with those black pumps should be perfectly enough to capture a gothic mood without going to literally into a theme, which is something that makes it even more interesting IMO. It´s up to oneself if you´d still need black eyeshadow but I think a paler teint is always best to go along with the look.

My look always has a decent amount of rock in it, if I play around with goth, than it usually works best for me in a sartorial view: black skinny blazer, either a slim voile shirt (black or dusty-rose) or a black v-neck, those torn black coated Dior Homme S/S 04 denims and some suede ankle boots. I usuallly accessorize with an antique Art-déco onyx/silver pendant, vintage dark brown leather belt, black eyeliner and nailgloss (I think it actually looks good on me because I have quite androgynous features). I´d love to try a pair of skinny patent trousers if I ever found some with a decent quality...

Oh, and here´s just some pictures of my favourite gothic moments in fashion, enjoy :)

I'm not a big fan of gothic clothing, but some pieces are ok.

It's just that the shoes and the corsets and all...NO NO.

I mean, look at this outfit...

I love fashionable gothic clothes/style. There's a world of difference between gothic runway looks and the way the "goth" kids in high schools dress. You can hardly even make the comparison. There's a lot of black in both. That's it.

I agree totally. It can look very classy too as evident from the pics last posted by Trico esp the 2nd and 3rd pics. Above all, sometimes it just best represents how I feel and I can express it in the way I dress.

'goth' is a sub-culture...

gothic is a period in art and architecture...

i love the gothic trend, but it all depends on the amount of gothic element on one set of outfit.
i saw the most horrible Goth look last week.... a over 200 pound girl wearing a patent leather corset with a red net long sleeve top inside, she also put on a pair of utra platform knee high compat boots...combining with unwashed black hair and over smokey eyes... :yuk:scary...

My newest top, which is lovely to me, and faintly Gothic in styling.
i adore it!!!!:woot: :woot: :woot: :woot: where did you get it??? i have been looking for something like this for ages...

love gothic-style. avante-garde gothic japanese-lolita dresses especially. not the really lacy ones, the ones with a "battle warrior" kick. asymetrical cuts, drapey thin fabrics, thick obi belts a la the gate keeper in Sky High.

i also love fishnets, rich dark fabrics, lace, and combat boots. i think it's an incredible but look but incredibly hard to pull off! it always ends up looking sooo. 'skanky' for lack of a better word. or really overdone. i go to a local club every wednesday for goth/industrial dance night (<3 darkwave), but the vaaast majority of people there just overdo it. it's still fun to dress up, though! i consider "goth" more of a game, y'know--it's more than a "fashion trend," there's a personality to go with it. whenever i go i always try to think about this as i am getting dressed. though i usually end up dressing myself in my own blend of updated "cute/gothic/grunge" clothing. that's just me to a t, though. i can't help myself! ^_^

especially these outfits:

THIS one is my favorite:

This is probably more something I would wear in everyday life, though:

when i was a teenager we called goths deathbabies. and decided we weren't like them. but basically we were. and i used to go to tokyo and hang out in harajuku. i used to totally dress like that- creepers, striped tights, gaultier ripoff ruffley corset mini-dresses, and my hair is all curly. it went over pretty well. but we called ourselves glam punks. go figure. also- LBG- i didn't realize this was the term for that look until recently. oops.

here is a photo from the 80s of that style. it is a bit disturbing i think.

For those of you that'd like to encorporate 'goth' into your wardrobe straight from the source but have been woefully disappointed in trying, I recommend checking out Heavy Red. The problem with a lot of modern gothic clothing is that it's painfully tacky and over-the-top--like renaissance-style ballgowns or PVC catsuits. HR has some nice, subtler pieces that you could mix with 'normal' clothing without looking like you're heading to the batcave, and it's affordable. I own a couple tops, and while the quality isn't knock-my-socks-off fantastic, it certainly isn't Hot Topic.

Gothic style of dressing is horrible!

In my opinion.

Don't worry, you are not the only one here, I personally hate most of the gothic look as well!!

i love goth clothing. as people said its a huge different between goth and goth, people often relate goths with something negative because of the children with pink hair and rasta. i dont understand how people could se goth boring, its like the most outstanding style i know, its very unpredictable with their cuts and patterns. aint boring just because its black.
