For those who dont know what STM is its the weekend sunday times magazine in western australia, quite a good article. Not sure i believe she is the next kate moss but definatly a stunner!
Small To Big I was just looking through yesterdays STM mag and noticed Grace Small on the cover, and a big write up about her in there! Fellow perthians would of seen it. But anyone else interested, here it is
Local Kate Moss lookalike Grace Small, 16, is tipped for huge things in the modelling world. Candice Silverman reports.
Grace Small has the kind of face you can't take your eyes off. With golden skin, long honeyed hair and striking green eyes, the former Fremantle school - girl is just 16 and taking the Australian modelling industry by storm. Small who, started modelling a year ago, has clocked up major campaigns for Witchery, Sportsgirl, Insight, Seduce and graced the pages of myrid fashion glossies including H arper's ******, M arie claire and Vogue Girl. She has also caught the attention of international fashion luminaries including Collette Dinnigian, Prada and Commes des Garcon. But sitting in the cool airconditioned Perth offices of Chadwick's modelling agency she is more embarassed than excited about suggestions she'll be the next "big thing" out of the Perth fashion scene. "Oh I just try not to think about it," she says. Small is dressed in tight black jeans, a boho cotton midriff top, a pair of leopard print flats and sports a pair of cool oversized sunglasses on top of her head. Her conversation is peppered with teenage lingo "like" and "man", but while Small may sound young her down-to-earth attitude to her rapid rise through the modelling ranks belies her age. Spotted in January last year by local stylist Dan Ryan at an Xtreme Agency modelling class, small was sceptical when Ryan showered her with praise. "When Dan Ryan said to me 'You are so beautiful' I was like 'Yeah right' I thought he was trying to get me into the p*rn industry or something she says with a laugh. But Ryan a fan of Kate Moss, was struck by by Small's similarity to the British supermodel and persisted with organising a photo shoot. Three weeks later Small was on her way to sydney. Ryan is not alone in comparing small with Moss and there is something in the way she moves that calls the supermodel to mind. However Small takes the comparisons in her long -legged stride. " It's really flattering, but i just want to look like me," she says. Jenny Hayes at Chadwick's head office in Sydney picked Small from a selection of photos showcasing the agency's new national talent. She is now part of a new developement program, which nutures future stars. "Grace has done very well very quickly. She has the ability to be a major talent. She has that special something; she has that indefinable "it", Hayes says. Eight months after joining the modelling ranks Small was chosen by Collette Dinnigan to star in her 10th aniversary show in Paris. She also worked in Dinnigan's showroom modelling clothes for prospective buyers. But Small is quick to dispel any ideas of glamour. "They were really long days," she says. "You're just trying on the same clothes over and over again." Small also attended up to 17 castings a day for other designers and was required to navigate her way through the streets of Paris. "At first i was freaking out, but by the end I was loving it," she says. While in Paris, Small appeared in a handful of other shows including opening for Commes des Garcon. She has also caught the attention of Russell Marsh, Prada's runway casting agent who spied her on the cover of R ussh magazine. Two days and a few hetic phone calls later, Small was on her way to Milan. But this time luck was not on her side. "When i got to the agency in Milan, the clothes were for tall girls and I'm really short so they didn't fit and I couldn't do the show" Small says. At 170cm, Small may not be short by mere-mortal standards, but in the fashion world freaky forms she comes in a little under the radar, not unlike Moss who tops the tape measure at 173cm. However, Small is adamant that while her looks may be comparable to Moss, who recently made headlines and lost major fashion contracts in a cocaine scandal, her lifestyle is not. "I think I'm going to try and stay away from that scene. I know how to say no. If you do that (take drugs) you kind of get a reputation at the agency as a party animal and they don't think of you as fresh. People want me to be fresh looking" she says. "People have asked me to go to parties (after the shows), but i'm always so tired anyway I just want to go home to bed." Along with keeping her fresh- faced appeal, Small works at keeping her figure slim and toned. " I exercise and eat healthy. I don't eat ****, but i treat myself once a week on ice cream or chocolate and I go for an hour walk everynight. I've also just started doing Kung fu and that gives you a great work-out." Small says her dramatic life change from living and travelling independantly in Sydney and Paris has forced her to grow up quickly. "When i first went to sydney it was really daunting. I was very shy and I found it hard to meet new people," she says. " But now i've become a completely different person. I've become really good at meeting new people and I'm a lot more confident. It's really done a lot for my personality. "Obviously, I don't know who i am totally because I'm ony 16, but i've learnt a lot about myself and how strong i can be." If, as Hayes predicts, Small goes on to greater things she will be following in the footsteps of fellow Perth schoolgirl Gemma Ward, currently regarded as one of the world's top models. But Small finds predictions she will be the next Ward disconcerting. " That's fantastic and absolutely crazy, but i really wish people wouldn't say it and just let me be me. Also I can't think about it too much incase it doesn't happen." For now Small is just enjoying the ride. which will see her travel to Japan to work with Image Agency and return to Paris in hope of editorial work. But before she steps back on to the fashion circuit Small wants to enjoy some tme with her family, riding her dirt bike and listening to heavy metal. "I'm just looking forward to hanging out and being a 16 year old for a while," She says.
^ thanks for the article, Amanda
it's a shame that she didn't get to walk the Prada show. but i thought they should have put Grace to the MiuMiu show. and i would love to see Grace and Mona doing a photo shoot together. they are my favorite 5'7 girls and they both look a little bit like Kate Moss. and good luck to Grace in 2006.
So many talking about Grace and Mona looks the same, but i neve rgot it.... I always thought that garce is a bit "flat" next to Mona.
Or maybe its more like this: Mona have the best from Grace and Anne Marie (wich is also a common resamble to Mona)
hmmm... well here is the opening girl from Commes de Garcons. You cant really tell because of all the make up but in terms of height it looks like Grace. The model is credited as Tania K from IMG. (style.com)
^^ It is definitely not Grace. She isn't in any of the runway pics for Commes Des Garcons ... so I dunno what they meant about her opening the show ... ??
