the quote is from a magazine interview (NME)...
this 'article' took it out of context....... this is how the quote is in the magazine....
"Everyone has a veiw on Gwen Stefani: She's a punk-rock pin up, female david bowie, the new pricess of pop, a style icon, a hip-hop superstar, a movie starlet, the red-carpet goddess, a cultural chameleon. Just don't call her a faker...
"What would I say to those people," spits Stefani in her helium-tipped Cali-purr. "is do your research. I was in a band with all guys since i was 16 years old. I've been in a f***ing rock band touring the f***ing world for 18 years. So if you're gonna try and erase that, then I'm going to stick my finger right up in your face. 'Cos you know what? I did it. And you try to be a girl and do that in 1987.
"I know what it's like to be up onstage with anyone from a stupid f***ing wannabe punk rock band with a bunch of f***ing wannabe punk rock kids in the audience to, like, opening for U2, opening for the Rolling Stones. I've mean we've shared the stage with so many different kinds of groups. We played the f***ing warped tour! I was one of the first females to do that- it was like (tampon-flinging girl grungers) l7 and No Doubt!"
A pause for breath and a flash of that winning Hollywood smile: "You can tell i get a little bit angry...No, not angry, but I feel a little bit like y'know what? I don't need to hear it."
so, it's pointed towards people who call her 'fake'...
it's not saying what she's doing is 'rock'....but that it's really not fair to deny her the time she's done being real and working for her position as a part of recent rock history.....
no, love. angel. music. baby. is NOT rock....
but she's talking about No Doubt, not her current endeavour. no doubt have always had a 'pop' edge to 'em, but what hugely successful rock band doesn't? gwen is as much a part of that success as the rest of the band, just cos she's the lead singer and writes the lyrics doesn't make her less worthy than her band members (one of which hasn't done any writing on any of their albums, as far as i know..but i don't have my booklets here to double check..hah, so i could be wrong, he couldn've helped with a song or two) ....almost all of their songs are collaborations between them all..
but yes, gwen does know guitar, enough to write music, at least. she solely wrote two songs on the return of saturn album...one of which was a single ('simple kind of life')
