:( Those pictures make me incredibly sad. I'd much rather have a big house filled with personal possessions than a rather impersonal collection of clothing by only one designer.

Exactly. Or in my case, a little house with personal posessions and crazy, funky bits and pieces acquired over the years with a sense of purpose and enjoyment.

I guess for these people it says what they want to say to have nothing but Chanel in the house but for me, there are many, many other facets to my personality besides my clothing tastes. I certainly hope their inner life is richer than their outer life.

ahh yes yes, alot of people have EXTREMELY cluttered rooms like that in tokyo... not surprising. well half of it is because the rooms are small, and the other half is that people tend to collect and collect and collect... and they wont throw ANYTHING away because "its a waste of money". ...

i really don't see how the collections are 'impersonal'...if anything...i think they are VERY personal and i'm sure these people get a tremendous ammount of joy from it or else why would they do it?!?!?...i'm sure their hearts skipped a beat when they purchased each item and they still display them lovingly and enjoy looking at them and/or using them...some people like to play tennis and some people like shopping/fashion...what's the big deal...

it's the never throwing anything away part that really makes it crazy...because you accumulate so much over a lifetime...

I can by no means judge them. If you ever saw the massive amount of cocktail, glassware and china from the 40s-60s I have in my kitchen cabinets (and I don't even entertain) you would think I was insane. The only thing that I find odd is the woman who buys 3 bags and uses one. But then again, I couldn't possibly have used every serving platter. The last woman just seems incredibly practical in her wardrobe with so much Narciso. I don't think I've ever identified with one singular designer to purchase almost exclusively.

^^ Yes. That's what I mean by impersonal. It sort of seems that the only thought that's gone into the purchases is "Oh, it's X brand, I'll buy it". Don't get me wrong - you can certainly love a particular brand, but buying one brand ONLY? That would kinda take the fun out of shopping for me.

welll...i think that that's just your personal preference...i think these people have a very personal attachment to these items...

but don't get me wrong...i still think it's nutty and i could never relegate myself to
just one brand either...

i just don't think it's 'impersonal'... it's their personal preference...:flower:

I agree

Side note, I noticed in a few of the photos the people hanging their collections in the window. Are they crazy? The sun will destroy the pieces( sun bleaching). Maybe they just did that for the photos I hope.

Sorry to bring up an old thread like this, but if you are looking for the book that this article is taken from, it's called "Tokyo Style", and their is an interview with the author in this months "Theme" magazine (available at borders)
