Harper's Bazaar Italia #21 June/July/August 2025 by Juergen Teller

Is Harper's Bazaar Italia celebrating a Jubilee or is it a celebration of something that I am not aware of?

Text by Juergen Teller (in case you care about the idea behind the cover story) :

The Path of Hope

Dovile and I had long thought it would be wonderful to photograph Pope Francis. He was such a positive figure, an incredibly good man. In April 2024, I received an official commission from the Vatican to photograph him during his visit to the Venice Biennale. The images were intended for the catalog of the Pavilion of the Holy See, set up that year in the women's prison on the island of Giudecca. It was a historic event: it was the first time a pontiff had visited the Biennale. I followed him as he met with the inmates, the guards, the artists and the dignitaries. He brought humanity, warmth and hope to a place where hope seemed hard to find. This experience left a deep mark on both Dovile and me. We began reading Pope Francis's books and something grew inside us, stronger and stronger. During our travels we visited many churches, lit candles and reflected on life, religion, the world. The imposing architecture, the magnificent aura of these temples filled with art, craftsmanship, flowers and candles, and the culture of taking care of their beauty, have always deeply impressed me. When Harper's Bazaar Italia asked us to take care of this sort of Grand Tour, we accepted, imagining an on the road itinerary through Italy. I wanted to go to Rimini, to Sabbioneta where I have an exhibition underway, maybe to Trieste or to lesser-known cities and towns instead of the classic destinations like Venice, Rome and Naples. During the creative discussion with the magazine we realized that this was a jubilee year and therefore it was important to include the capital. I was less enthusiastic, it seemed like an almost too obvious choice, until Dovile – reflecting on the route, on the Jubilee and on Rome – had an intuition: to photograph the entire service inside the churches. Suddenly I was enthusiastic: her idea made perfect sense. So we set off on an extraordinary journey, together with Mariacarla Boscono, Alex Consani, Elisabetta Dessy, Noor Khan and Awar Odhiang, visiting numerous churches, from St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican to the sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Graces in Grazie di Curtatone, near Mantua, from San Giovanni Battista in Campi Bisenzio to the Duomo in Orvieto. The choice to shoot with a small camera, without flash, without equipment and without a large team allowed us to respect the solemnity and etiquette of those sacred places. In the uncertainty of the world, in the deterioration of humanity, I want the reader to observe, contemplate and rediscover faith in peace and hope in taking care of each other. I would like this portfolio to also be a positive message for the new generations: "Please consider and embrace the idea that the world is not lost. There is always hope. It is within you."

The Jubilee cover story is just beautiful. Juergen Teller is a good choice for it.

Definitely not for me, never been a fan of this sort of direction in fashion photography. Mert & Marcus could've added a bit of necessary flair for this to appeal at all to me.
Personally, I do not see Mert & Marcus as the right fit for the cover story in these locations of worship. Another photographer is a possibility though.

If you read my previous post, the magazine's initial request had absolutely NOTHING to do with Jubilee or the Church in general; HB Italia hired Teller to photograph what was intended to be The Grand (Italian) Tour - practically, a travel postcard from Italy - but it was the 'brilliant' Dovile Drizyte who brought the Catholic Church and its Jubilee into the whole thing.

You were right :(

Weirdly « The dreamers » is my favorite on here. It’s just more engaging in terms of photography.

I’m at the point where Teller does nothing for me tbh.

When are M/M supposed to start at Bazaar Italia?

Om
Thank you dear @Zorka ...

yes, like i mentioned before, the main story is a 70 something page big story, but they could have reduced to 20..starting with Dovile'dreadful images...why he insist to put her on editorials?...

Anyway, this is a waste of an issue. we all should wait for september
OMG Dovile is modeling again!! She’s a creative partner AND a model!! Cant wait for her to take Juergen Teller’s camera and get rid of him allyogether. His career will be better off!!
She pulls off stupid ideas so well! Like holding a dumb prop and making it Dolce and Garbanzo beans.
