Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams have split after three years together, a source confirms to PEOPLE.
"It was rocky for awhile," says a source close to the couple. "They did what they could to make it work."
The source says the split was amicable.
The pair, who welcomed daughter Matilda in October 2005, met while they were filming Brokeback Mountain in 2004.
Costars say the chemistry was obvious from the start. "I remember being in rehearsal, and the two of them had googly eyes with each other," costar Jake Gyllenhaal said of the couple. "There were sparks immediately," added costar Anne Hathaway. "It was adorable."
The Brooklyn-based duo welcomed their daughter during promotion for the film, with Ledger calling the former Dawson's Creek star the perfect mom.
But the rigorous schedule wasn't easy. "We started promoting the movie about three weeks after (Matilda) was born, which was too soon," she said in a 2006 interview. "I'm just learning lessons now, like learning how to be a working mom."

i'm surprised to hear this actually....
i thought because they were so low-key that they'd have a chance...
they seemed to both be very private people....

The pill isn't effective either. The only safe sex there is, is not having sex.

The pill is 99% safe and it's not the only way to control births. It's pretty ******** to say that incidents like having a child happens there are A LOT of ways to make it not happen.

My little cousin was a "pill baby" and my Aunt certainly wasn't irresponsible about taking the pill, nor was she on any antibiotic etc, she and the doctor were both surprised.There was no "reason" for it, I guess if your gonna get pregant, your gonna get pregnant. Besides, the pill isn't for everyone for a number of reasons: doesn't work with your hormones, makes you feel crap 24/7, not in a relationship, yet I'd still count people using condoms as responsible even though they have a higher risk of not working.
The only fool proof way to not get pregnant is to not have sex, period.
Heath and Michelle seem to have handled it responsibly anyway, even if it wasn't the ideal situation. Sad though it is, it's probably better for them to split up and work on how to be civil, great parents together now than in a few years time when it will affect her more because she'd know what happened. At least this way it will be the only thing she can remember (if it's true and permanent of course) loving, separate parents.
That blind item has been attributed to several couples, including Hayden Christensen/Rachel Bilson and even Rachel McAdams/Ryan Gosling, though it doesn't sound too much like the latter because RG has not had many set backs recently. Who knows.

^ I don't think they are really the publicity whores type....
to "break up" just for press for the movie. ( They can both act- they don't need that)
I would think they announced it to avoid couples questions during the promotions.
