Imagine if there were a World Cup of modelling and Canada faced off against Eastern Europe.
The battle for the championship would be as close as this summer's showdown between Italy and France.
Canada has long been a force on the foreign runways. But never has this country had so many "it" girls at one time. The runways of Olympus Fashion Week were stocked with regulars, rookies and break-out stars including the serene Jessica Stam from Barrie, the punky Irina Lazareanu from Quebec, and Vancouver's Coco Rocha, an insolent strawberry blond with flat eyebrows and a menacing glare.
Canada's, and Mississauga's, biggest star, Daria Werbowy, has decided to take a breather from the runway this season, telling fashionwiredaily.com recently that she was heading home. Calgary's Heather Marks, meanwhile, missed New York in favour of some big money jobs, but she will do Paris and Milan.
Modelling agencies confide that the list of northerners stalking the catwalks of America would have been far longer if work visas were easier to obtain. They promise an even greater Canadian presence in Paris and Milan, when shows open there on Sunday.
Eastern Europe can claim its own army of almost-anorexics. Snejana, Sasha, Svieta, Yevgeniya, Vlada, Zuzana and many other consonant-crammed names are cashing in on the expansive Slavic bone structure.
Add to that a yearning borne out of decades of Soviet-induced deprivation and you've got the makings of a supermodel superpower.
While ambition and architectural stature fuel the European girls, the Canadians provide intriguing ethnic mixes and fine manners.
And they say nice guys finish last
