Heavy Fabrics S/S 06

I've noticed throughout the s/s collections that designers seem to be gravitating towards very heavy, structured, "couture" fabrics from gazar, radzmir, taffeta, the thickest of duchesse satins all the way through to organza and even including the acres of cotton poplin that appeared with eyelets everywhere. Using those fabrics gave a lot of shape to the clothes, whether it was Balenciaga's egg-dresses and fitted blazers or Marc Jacobs stiff cowl backs......

I personally like it, it feels very new for right now after so many seasons of whispy chiffons and slinky jerseys and charmeuse. I wonder if this will be a new direction designers will take in the upcoming seasons or if it's just the last traces of last season's 60's trend.

Thanks for this thread spike. I've noticed this in autumnal clothing for quite a while (for obvious reasons!) but when I think of this I usually think of marni who use a lot of stiff and heavy fabrics (almost like burlap and things) but i enjoy these other examples. I quite like mixing very light 'airy' fabrics with something quite heavy myself.
