It does make Kevin Costner more likely. I'm hoping he'll sign on because I think he and Diane would be great together as Pa and Ma Kent.

As for villain rumours, Daniel Day Lewis is rumoured for Lex/Zod and Viggo Mortensen for Zod.

Either guy doesn't really seem likely because they are supposedly quite selective. On the other hand, this will obviously be an all-star cast so maybe...

BURBANK, CA, March 2, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Oscar®-nominated actress Diane Lane will play Martha Kent, the only mother Clark Kent has ever known, in the new Superman movie to be directed by Zack Snyder.
Snyder stated, “This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”
Lane will star with Henry Cavill, who was recently announced as the new Clark Kent/Superman.
Lane earned an Academy Award® nomination for her performance in the 2002 drama “Unfaithful.” She most recently starred in the family hit “Secretariat.” She next stars in the HBO feature “Cinema Verite,” opposite Tim Robbins and James Gandolfini. Lane’s long list of film credits also includes “Nights in Rodanthe,” “Hollywoodland,” “Must Love Dogs,” “Under the Tuscan Sun,” “Perfect Storm,” “My Dog Skip,” “Chaplin,” “The Cotton Club” and “A Little Romance,” to name only a portion.
Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.
Slated for release in December 2012, the new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

I love Diane LAne, she is really a great actress, Kevin COstner not so much.

There is no way they will be able to get Daniel Day Lewis, he does not do movies like this and he is rumoured to be doing Lincoln with Steven Spielberg this fall.

I love Viggo, he is brilliant and he did do the Lord of the Rings movies so maybe he will agree, fingers crossed!!

^Yeah, I don't think DDL will do it either. Viggo is also being eyed for another project and they are just rumours. But if there's any truth in them, it says a lot about the level and talent they are going for. Very good news imo.

As for Lex - I'm conflicted. I like tons of the suggestions but shouldn't they cast for a younger Lex as well? Maybe I'm coloured by Smallville and that's why I think Lex and Clark are around the same age?

^He's saying all the right things, that's for sure.

My only concern has always been that Snyder has visual flair but lacks depth. I can't say for sure since I haven't seen his movies but that's what I've gathered from fans anyway. In that sense, it's reassuring to know that Nolan and Goyer are behind the story and script because that's one of their strengths.

In addition, we have Henry (yay) and Diane Lane so we also know they are going for a good cast as well. Now if only they would cast more people!

^I am very happy as well that Nolan and Goyer are working on the script, I think visually Snyder can be very good (300 and the Watchmen visually were stunnung), but in terms of content Snyder leaves much to be desired (I heard the "Sucker Punch" sucks ***)

In term of casting LAineyGossip who was spot on with the casting for The Hunger Games, says that Biel has a very strong chance of getting cast as the gf, and that in my view will just ruin everything as she will also do the whole faux romance with our boy Cavill and of course she is a terrible actress.

I really, really don't want Biel. I don't feel like her acting has ever developed beyond 7th Heaven despite, however more famous she has become.
