Holiday Magazine S/S 2025 : The Zurich Issue

detroit's comeback is welll well documented, in american media, bruce weber was all about detroit about a decade pre the holiday magazine issue actually-- im actually placing it in the same bucket as zurich here so please dont take it that im bashing detroit? i just think the magazine's concept works imo when theyre picking a sort of typical or even low brow/expected holiday place and putting a high brow spin on it rather than picking a high brow destination to show through a high brow lens, like this zurich issue, the detroit issue, a lot of the content could just be WSJ or T magazine really

Detroit is not a "high brow" place whatsoever (considered globally, at least), and the campaign to reintroduce it as something other than derelict is a worthy one, imo. But this is not that. I don't think this magazine tried to present it as a luxurious holiday destination. Quite the opposite, really. I think the magazine tries to highlight places with a distinctive soul/feel/culture and just capture it for the readers. Whether that's Zurich or Cuba or Palm Springs or Istanbul or Saint Petersburg or Ethiopia or Bhutan. Maybe the title, Holiday, sets a certain expectation, but it's not trying to be Travel + Leisure magazine.

Besides, Egypt and Capri? Hardly underrepresented, they've been the subject of many, many, many "high brow" spins, I don't see that there's a need to prioritize them.

Well I would not agree with you at all!

You see American media is always very negative and rarely they show positive changes. In the case of Detroit I don’t know how much you know, but a city with a bad reputation is changing drastically.

First, all of abandoned car companies are being converted into a very modern high tech companies, a lot of Canadians are coming to work there bcs the border is right there. Detroit is fastest growing american city with rise of organic farms, all around city area and so called “Greek Town” Downtown has best food and restaurants that are becoming worldwide known. Also party scene is amazing, there is something for everybody, I mean it’s Motown we are talking about.

Not to mention that Gucci open the biggest store in North America in Detroit wanting to prove Detroit is changing. As for the crime, Detroit is no longer on the map as the most dangerous, that title holder is now Chicago, unfortunately.

So I know what the Editors of Holiday are trying to do. I love this magazine and fully supporting it. All three Zurich covers are on their way to my Holiday Collection. ❤️
Me sitting here in St. Louis chuckling as Chicago gets called as the American city with the worst crime.

Having studied and living in Chicago (polish part) I found Chicago one of the most dangerous cities I’ve ever been. So unsafe. Don’t have a wish to go back. Cannot walk at night. And numbers and statistics are not invented. City with biggest rate of murders in US.

In certain parts yes but overall it’s just as bad as London or New York or Rome… again in some places only though

I have so many questions! I thought you were still our NZ ambassador! 😭

You guys are making me want to visit Chicago, it was on my plans for this year but I wasn't completely sure! drop the top 10, @justaguy !
You remember so well! I move from NZ to Chicago in 2018 and it's been a blast ever since. I don't care what anyone says, Chicago has THE prettiest downtown in USA. The culture and events are everything you could ask for and we'd love to have you!

All this chit-chat on Chicago is great, but does anyone have scans / the photos of what's in the magazine? Curious about the content.
Some of the content is posted on Holiday's instagram.

I lived in Chicago, Fort Lauderdale, London & Paris. Rome I visit often. I find it very safe.
I’ve briefly lived and been in all of the above except for FL. Rome is not all posh and central like we see it on IG. Some areas are quite rough despite their gorgeous facade. But again, just like in many cities everywhere these days

I’ve lived here for over a decade, this is just patently false. Per the federal government, Chicago is currently #15 for murder rate & #18 for violent crime rate. Mobile, Alabama is more dangerous than Chicago, so go somewhere else with your incorrect fear mongering.

In terms of bigger cities, (not small unknown ones) still no.1

And again, I talk about my experience. I didn’t have good experience. All good. We have different lives and different backgrounds. Just saying it’s not my cup of tea. But of course I respect everyone else opinion.
