Hussein Chalayan F/W 03.04

From what I can see, for Fall 2003 Chalayan presents and gifts us with a quieting but empathic offering that both signals a (very well-deserved) sense of personal satisfaction and invigorates his image as experimenter.

This collection inventories and alludes to a sort of closure from previous explorations while lacing and containing, with an almost optimistic thread, any hints of "uncertainty" that may be gleaned from it. He actually seems to entertain the notion of a more general and multi-purpose role of apparel since so many of these pieces serve not only to shelter or shell a body but also to adorn, enhance, and indeed preserve on some level.

Perhaps Chalayan really recognizes and here humbly acknowledges his position as one of not many more than a handful of industry leaders. While he's not content to take a breather himself, he affords other designers this opportunity to get caught up, choosing this time to present an emotionally stimulating and not-as-obliquely beautiful collection.

It is more than a bit disconcerting to witness a Chalayan
collection where adjectives such as "sexy" come to mind.

The designer said it symbolized Noah’s Ark: hope for humanity after the deluge . Well since he's turkish and muslim ( non practicing, he eats pork and drinks alcohol ), Chalayan had to make some kind of statement regarding the impending war and obviously he's optimistic regarding that whole situation

Very beautifully put, Xopher. I wasn't too impressed w/it when I saw it the first time, but now it's one of my favorites. I think I got too comfortable w/Hussein being deconstructive that I couldn't appreciate the more quiet beauty he was striving for.

or perhaps hussein intends the 'floaters' and balloons(to float away) as safety equipment during an emergency

as art, it plays tricks with my eyes, so it's interesting, though the dresses are very wearable, esp. the gunmetal coloured one
