i-D Summer 2019 : The 'Voice of a Generation' Issue

The entire cult around this girl eerily mimics a John Waters or Christopher Guest movie. It's astonishing to me that a personal pledge came to the point of being nominated for a Nobel Prize. Of course climate change is a pressing issue for many people, but I think her meteoric rise to activism fame says more about our culture than the problem. What's also creepy is the amount of adults who frequent her social media from both camps, the detractors with their 'look at all that single-use plastic, shame on you!' type criticism, and the supporters and their 'She's finally in London! Stay strong, our brave little lionheart/heroine' fanaticism.

As for this cover, if I didn't read the credits I'd have thought it was shot by Alasdair. The blue is very him.
I expect Anja will get a cover too because this is her cause.

I can only echo all of your comments. The phenomenon around this girl is out of control; maybe she started by herself and sincerely but I bet there are some powerful figures manipulating her image now and the fact that she’s on the cover of a magazine like i-D only increases these ideas to me..
Bad shot anyway.

This is lackluster and completely démodé. Dazed & Confused finally broke out if the "Millennial" aesthetic, so seeing it applied here again is disappointing. Maybe the next issue of ID will follow suit.

Of all the game changers out there, why her? Not discrediting her, but its nothing special.

Makes me question if i-D fervently believes in the cause or just wants to ride in on the hype.

White people were getting jealous of Malala and that's why they created this girl.

I'm disgusted by all the comments. Get a life people. At least she's saying something really important in public and making a lot of kids to take conscious about the climate issue.

Instead of criticize a little girl on a forum, you can share the voice and be part of it. Embarrasing.

thank you, helmutnotdead

why is everyone so sour here?

all these kids are alright. it's high time for a new youth revolution.

There’s nothing wrong with what she does, but that doesn’t mean she has to appear on the cover of i-D.

At least she's there with a right cause, not like Kylie Jenner & co... If more kids were like this girl, the state of our civilization wouldn't be so hopeless.

Given what can happen to children and young people thrust into the public eye, I fear for her future more than I do for the environment.

A young person is like a blank slate where people can project qualities of innocence and purity, and then bend them to suit their own purposes - especially politicians, most of whom would delight in the moral whitewashing that any association with her would bring.

Also, people with certain conditions are described as vulnerable for a reason. That's not to say they can't make a great success of life - it's the awareness that they might be more easily thrown off course.

The complexities of life can be crushing enough when you've got decades of experience behind you. If the main tool in your arsenal at 16 years old is being able to "see things in black and white"... the realisation that this approach can only go so far in solving problems - on a personal level, never mind a global one - may prove difficult for an individual to process, when it sets in.

The environment might need more spokespeople, but it doesn't need a martyr, and there are probably enough pawns in the game already.

It already happened! Quite a few opportunistic adults used her campaign for their own revolting agendas and actually managed to make money off it. I expect governments will be next.

See, this is why I reckon children should never be in the limelight, whether it's Kim Kardashian's eldest, Millie Bobby Brown, or this girl because it's a bit like a double-edged sword. You can't deny people their opinion on a public figure, and that's what she is at this point. When you have headlines such as 'Greta Thurnberg criticises the UK government for...' in media outlets aimed at adults, what can one expect?
