Icon is consistently coming out on top with such interesting, even weirder, and always more sophisticated content, despite it being more of a classically men’s magazine with its deluxe features of cars/motorcycles/fine spirits etc. It never feels anywhere near as desperately-fratboy hetero as some men’s rags seem to be. It’s that confident handsome straight guy who is so effortlessly down flirting/playing/hanging out with us gays. It’s what Arena was back in the 90s/early-2000s before Juergen’s mid-life crisis faux-indie desperation engulfed and consumed it.
Boyd’s sort of this 2nd-rate Charlie Hunam/Garrett Hedlund— both of whom I still to this day easily mix up with one another, maybe because my ex does resemble a mix of them. But the way Boyd’s shot and presented is so top-rate and they treat him like a superstar— not some 2nd-rate actor who was in the abysmal The Predator. His fashion story here is gorgeous without being forced. Editor Federico, whether he’s working with Mario Sorrenti shooting Aaron Taylor-Jonson, or with Craig shooting Boyd, really knows how to bring out the best in everyone, for such strong, modern and playful takes on masculinity. He’s like Emmanuelle and her Vogue: both are very confident and directional in their presentation of men and women.
With L’UOMO and Vogue Homme gone, Icon is becoming one of my fav men’s rag out there.
I’m sure Benn will posting the stories shortly. They don’t disappoint.
