here's an interview with her, from austrian magazine "woman"
IRIS ON STAGE
Iris Strubegger. A girl from Salzburg is the shooting star on fashion's-heaven. From Lagerfeld to Dolce & Gabanna - all of them want her.
On the catwalk she can look tremendously cool, but private, Iris Strubegger (23) is the most natural girl all over the world. When she is back home, in St. Johann im Pongau, all the fame and "Vogue"-covers, campaigns or shows are forgotten. "If I get arrogant someday, my people would have to slap me in the face!", tells the tall Beauty with the cute Salzburger accent. And the german director of her agency "Place Models" slobbers over her: "I wish all girls would be as down-to-earth and lovely as Iris is." Although the modeljob was somehow served on a silver platter to the girl, who by the way also passed her studies in university with distinction.
The interview
Woman: So, you always have to be ready to pack your bags and travel somewhere.
Strubegger: You get used to it after a time. At the beginning it was a little hard, mainly because I missed my boyfriend very much.
W: Is he proud of his Topmodel?
S: I think so. But on the other hand he misses me too. But he knows that he can rely on me.
W: Models are known for always getting to go to the greatest partys.
S: Sometimes. There are some party-promoters who get paid for inviting models or famous people. I only go to a party if it is good for my career. The beautiful and rich people - to see and be seen, all this stuff. But to be honest I don't like it very much.
W: And what about drugs in the modelling-scene?
S: I don't smoke, I don't drink, I'm not interested in drugs at all.
W: And how do you experience the whole modelling scene?
S: It's exciting! And hard. I never know if I have to go to Paris the next day, or New York. I have to be really spontaneous. Then I arrive - totally tired and sometimes have to go directly to the job and be happy and funny. But if you got to work with great photographers and visit places you've never been to before, then it's exciting.
W: Has modelling always been a dream-job of yours?
S: No (laughs). It actually all happend by coincidence. When I was towering over all the others in the fourth-grade (primary school) there have been some who said: "She could be a model." But I never thought so.
W: Why not?
S: Oh, it was so far away. I though that it always would be the others, the cooler ones, who get in the famous magazines - but defenitely not me.
W: So, you didn't count yourself to "the cooler ones"?
S: Well, I live in the middle of nowhere - how could I be one of them? (laughs)
W: Then tell us, how did it happen?
S: Seven years ago I was in New York as an exchange-student for three months. And then a booker from an agency accosted me. It was quite weird.
W: What did he want exactly?
S: He asked me if I'm already with an agency, if I could send him some pics and stuff like that. I was totally stunned. I thought "Come on, everyone can say that."
W: But you kept in touch with the booker?
S: He was tenacious. He actually brought me to some agencies in New York. Since I didn't have a working-visa for the US, they sent me to Place Models in Germany. On weekends I did some test-shoots and then I got my first real jobs, shootings for "Freundin" or "Brigitte" and stuff like that.
W: Meanwhile you've been photographed for magazines like "Vogue", "Amica", "W" etc. You walked for nearly every Top-Designer. This already seems to be upper class!
S: (decent) Well, lets see how things will go on.
W: Between 2003 and 2007 you took a break, right?
S: Yes, I wanted to finish my studies and pass all the exams. (-She was at the university of applied sciences and studied digital television-)
W: So, you're a degreed engineer?
S: (laughs) Yes. After my graduation I just thought "Let's see if fashion-scene still wants me. Why not." I was lucky and could start again very quickly.
W: Would you join Heidi Klum's show?
S: No. I can't stand it. It's quite ridiculous.
W: What do you mean exactly?
S: Well, all the cat-fights and so on. There was one girl who was told by Heidi to tone up a little if she seriously wants to make it as a model, and immediately everyone troubled over Heidis statement. But you know, that's actually just how it goes in this business!
W: Models are often blamed for being a bad role model to young girls because they get anorexic then.
S: But it's not up to the models, it's the whole industry! If all the girls are as thin as a rake, you cannot come to a casting having love handles. If you want to work, you have to accept that. We can't change it.
W: Do you starve yourself?
S: No, but I have to be careful what I eat. Like, taking a lot of exercises and eating healthy. But defenitely not starving. And if my grandmother bakes a good cake....I just have to sin. (laughs)
W: Is there a danger of you getting arrogant and bitchy in this industry?
S: I hope not. (laughs) I always tell my friends to slap me in the face or pour some cold water over it, if I get arrogant someday.
W: Do you dream of starting an own family?
S: Yes defenitely! I'm saving money for it, so me and my boyfriend can build up something one day.
