It's My Style and I'm Sticking to It

I've never been much into following trends, though I have noticed that some things I always did were eventually copied by others in school despite them probably being embarrassed to admit they liked the style of the 'dorky loner'.

I much prefer sticking with my style rather than chasing fashion trends. Though I think plenty of people misunderstand 'sticking to a style' as literally wearing one outfit in different colours all the time. That isn't the case at all. I believe people can have their own style despite changing it along the way or having several 'looks'. I pick popular items to complement my style and shun other trends that I find hideous, that don't suit my body type or don't blend with my style and personality well. I don't see how it can become 'boring' if you can always add to your style.

For example, the high-waisted trend. This trend is recommended for my body type (petite and slim), but I simply don't like it and find it ugly on myself. So I don't wear it and I stick with what does work for me and what flatters my body whether others think it's 'in' or not.

Even though I do not rush to buy everything that is popular at the moment I still get plenty of compliments on my style whether I'm casual, cute or dressed to impress. Fashion is fleeting, but style is timeless. Trendy items will be 'old news' quickly, whereas a stylish piece will always be 'in fashion' no matter what time it is.

i have proper add style its all over the place.. and i must admit i am a bit of a trend wh*re.. but even when im buying into every new trend i stick to a few rules, like the same colour scemes, types of fastenings, lengths oftops and cuts etc. just updating them tofit in with trends etc. all though my friends all say i have my own style and they say they can always pick things out for me they think are "my style"

I think, if you found a look that is suitable for you in your teens and will remain suitable for you for the rest of your life, more power to you. However, I for one would get restless and bored with one look that I keep constant year after year, decade after decade.

kinda agree with that XD i've beem wearing dark colour since im a kid @_@ 14-15 while i should be wearing colours. and it just get worse as time goes by.

now there's only 3 main colour in my wardrobe, black, white, and gray. with a bit of blue and other muted colour here and there. but i do love it.
i feel incomfortable in colours @_@ especially pink! omg... my mom forced me into it once and i feel like dying.

and this year f/w collections has been heaven for me. my style always lean to the goth, punk, and kinda broken-ish side for years. and i believe it'd still be like that for many years to come.

I would have to say that my style is pretty eclectic, but no matter what it usually is pretty lady-like. I wear lots of dresses and love vintage handbags. I look very instyle when the old lady look is popular, but probably kooky when it isn't, but this is definitely my look, and I will probably always love it:smile:

I've realized one thing about my style lately: it doesn't matter that I am interested in knowing everything about fashion - including trends - my own style takes no advice whatsoever from the latest.
I might enjoy looking at what the Vogue Paris girls wear, for example, but I wouldn't want to dress like them myself. I'd feel like a poser, a mannequin. And, for me, the number one thing that makes a piece worth wearing is if I feel completely like myself in it. It needs to mix perfectly with my personality and my body. I don't like to play 'dress up' anymore.

I come up with outfit ideas myself and then seek the items out in stores. Which might be why I dislike shopping; I hardly ever find what I'm looking for! :P

^ I used to do that, and then decided that I needed to deal with what was actually in the stores  However, I have been able to decide colors of key accessories & an overall color scheme for the season, and then find it ...

So this season, I usually buy colorful accessories & had worn out almost everything black. So I needed a black bag, heels, and flats--and nothing boring either! So far I have everything but the flats--haven't really started shopping for those yet, but shouldn't be a problem. I also wanted to expand on my purple & grey color scheme, and I have done that as well. I started buying purple for fall some years ago ... maybe 6 years ago? I've let it rest for a couple years & am now going back to it again ...

I completely agree

Nice article.

I don't think I necessary have a signature style yet. I won't jump on trend wagons if it works against my personal taste.

My father definitely has a personal style and it's always been consistent. He only wears trousers, linen fabrics and suits never jeans, t-shirts sneakers or "casual" clothes. I can't describe it. It's definitely "him".

blazer or tuxedo (usually black) + white tee + black pants or black/grey/white jeans + black or white shoes or sneakers = fuuma uniform

Shirts. Skinny fit vest tops in black/white or grey. Striped shorts. Block colour sweaters. It's pretty much all I wear despite owning so much more, and its what I usually end up always buying cos I know its a safe option that I look good in.

I wish though that my style was more 'edgy' or whatever you cool kids call it today ^_^

But if you know you look good in it and it's something you like, why not stick with it?

I have the tendency to be annoyingly indecisive so I'm actually glad I can be pretty decisive about personal style. I've recently changed my ideas about what I like a little recently after being inspired by others, but I still stick to what suits me and what I know I can wear without feeling like I'm wearing a costume. I'm actually fascinated by people who can be very decisive with something like personal style and those who stick to it no matter what anyone else thinks and don't completely change according to what the current trends of the moment are, and I don't mean people who felt bored and just felt like changing their look.

I completely agree with you on the play dress up part...

My Style is changing... not drastically but I do feel more at ease with what I wear now.. I wish I could find more of what I really love to wear..but it never seems easy, and the few pieces which I really do love ..I get somehow scared to wear them. Rather silly.

i have a world of colour before me, but only wear black.
or red lipstick if I'm feeling adventurous

i'm driving people crazy when it comes to fashion. i am very simple, i tend to overdo simplicity. i wear mostly black clothes. sometimes grey or white. i like dresses a lot, but not skirts.

also. i think i am very labelled kind of person. i wouldnt wear anything vintage or non-labelled. i just... i cant help it. i have to reassure myself that i can afford buying expensive clothes and undies. i think it goes with my lack of self-confidence.

But if you know you look good in it and it's something you like, why not stick with it?

I guess because its not the clothes that I would wear if I had more confidence and was more sure in myself. But one day my confidence will pick back up and I can vary what I wear a bit more and not feel so self conscious.

Having said that,I love playing dress up behind closed doors. My hair and make up always look better then

I don't know why, but I never made that connection before ... thanks for explaining that.

Unfortunately my taste is sometimes expensive, but I love it when I love less expensive things. It's kind of my way of getting a bargain :P

I love dressing up too!, and trying out crazy looks.
Actually sometimes I prefer the playing around part rather than the final look

Discovering and Committing to a Personal Style

I'm not sure if this belongs to the personal style thread. It's got something to do with personal style, but the focus is more specific. There is also quite a bit of using celebrities as examples, not really as a discussion of their specific styles per se, but more a a common ground so we're all on the same page. If this is not where it should be, my apologies.

I find it quite fascinating that people can identify that they like a style but know it's not for them. Like when my friend says she likes rocker chic but won't go anywhere near moto jackets or anything with studs. Or when you hear someone(very stylish someone) say they love so-and-so's style when their own is vastly different. I guess my question is how do you know what is inherently your style and separate it from a style you love and admire a lot,but would not necessarily wear?

Also, do you find it hard to commit to a style? I see most celebrities and non-celebs not having an inherent style but doing looks instead. Maybe they'll target an image they want to portray i.e edgy, sexy, quirky, girly and then churn out looks that gives off those vibes, but they don't have a consistency. Example Whitney Port(i think she's cute!this is not an attack on her style. just saying). you can tell that overall she dresses cute and her general style is cute pretty. She wears a lot of pretty skirts/dresses it's true. but she also does a lot of the andro-in-a-borrow-from-boyf kinda thing with lots of oversized blazers, boyf jeans etc.

Do you even want to commit to a style?

*tend to go on and on and on. bold my questions for easy reading.

Hmmm ... I guess in my case I've always just known. This is me ... that isn't me. It has evolved a bit over the years, but there are also constant elements.

I have a Deco sideboard in my dining room that I just love. Still love it every time I see it. When I first saw it, my heart started beating faster--I had an adrenaline rush. It's not always like that, but with the most important pieces, you lock on & just absolutely know. At least, that's how it is for me.

It's also really important to me to get it right ... it kind of makes everything harmonious. I'd rather do without than compromise, because if I do, it's like a pebble in my shoe, a constant irritation ... so, I almost don't have a choice. I am definitely committed to my personal style ...
