Actually I have seen Carol Alt lately. I KNOW what a Super Model is, for heaven sake. I actually know quite a bit about the fashion industry, have been fascinated with it all of my life and have a wardrobe to prove it. This is why I find it hard to believe I could have missed the crowning of the first Super Model.


Carol Alt was at least as important as Janice. Carol Alt was a mega star.

One thing I can say about Cheryl Tiegs, she sure has held her looks better than some of the others. Christy Brinkley looks like hell, her face is fat or something and Janice looks like a bad drag queen.

So if you have to be on the cover of Vogue to be a Super Model, I guess you are saying that Tyra Banks isn't a Super Model, whatever.

Just like Simon Cowell, she is only imitating Simon and nothing would ever convince me otherwise. Everyone is copying Simon's style (I'm not talking about his clothes ) and have been since American Idol came out which was well before ANTM by the way. She's just a copy cat and she's not the only one.

Simon was the fist to make acting rude and insulting people hip, now everyone is on the band wagon trying to be a bad *** like him.

Quite possibly true, but unless you knew her way back when, you have no idea if she always had such a crude mouth. I only knew her as a model, so I don't either, but I looked up the preview pages of her first book, "No Lifeguard On Duty" on Amazon.com for possible answers. It seems the way she sounds on Top Model - frightfully honest - is somewhat reflected in the way she writes. I may have to read the entire book now. The book was copyrighted in 2002, and Top Model's first season didn't wrap until the end of 2002 or beginning of 2003 for airing in Summer 2003 as it did (I remember winner Adrienne Curry saying she had to keep mum for 2 -3 months after she won, so as not to expose the show's ending) so I doubt she would have rewritten the book to bank on her new fame as a caustic ex-'Supermodel' judge!

And as for aping Simon Cowell, I suspect that if she was always that way, then ANTM realized she could BE their "Simon," which is why they may have hired her. Then she's only fulfilling a role that the show wants her to play. Let's not underplay the fact that the show has kept her on more than any other judge - they see the value in her being 'villainous,' because it's always more interesting to have a villain on a show. Having her reveal her heretofore unknown 'true' sweet side would be like having Alexis Colby turn out to be more innocent that Krystle Carrington - booooring!

But your disdain for her is a personal reaction, and perfectly valid. I work in and have friends in the high fashion industry here in New York, and a lot of us both remember her from way back when, as well as love her acrid "judging" style because we feel she speaks a lot of truth from the bitchy side of the fashion industry. But that's us.

Exactly, people will believe her and that makes her a liar. Anyone can tell people that they have a career or a past that they did not and they will perhaps be believed but what would be the point of that, at the end of the day you have to live with yourself. She is trying to take a title that doesn't belong to her. It's no different than telling people you won Miss USA when you didn't.

Why does she have to exagerate? She so has much to be proud of so why lie?

I don't really dislike her, or like her.

I think she's just pitching a soundbite, not unlike Iman going along with her 'origin' story by Peter Beard, because it makes better press. Although she may not have had the exact title, she certainly WAS the equivalent of a supermodel in her day, of that I have NO doubt. If you are trying to hold her to some higher standard, don't hold your breath - she seems pretty happy with herself, which, despite her (numerous) flaws, I find admirable.

Meanwhile, I always thought Christie Brinkley's cheeks were too wide...

Well, I would guess that she was, that doesn't surprise me in the least. Tyra is one of the most successful models ever, especially now being the "host" of ANTM and all. I looked for a cover with her on it but it was too hard to find on google.

janice has ALWAYS been exactly the same and she was hired by ANTM because of HER personality- she didnt change it to 'be' simon cowell, whatever the intentions of that dubious show.

in her day janice WAS as super as ANY model and in my knowledge/understanding of the late 70s/early 80s she and patti hansen were the TOP girls.
If you can name any more successful high fashion models from 1978-83 Id like to hear them. Marisa Berenson & Jerry Hall came before Janice.
I'm going to have to study my 1975-80s magazines & later name all the top girls Ive seen in that era.

TYRA: I don't think tyra banks was ever on the cover of US vogue. if someone can disprove that go ahead. surely tyra was on the cover of SOME vogue, somewhere, can we see that??
'one of the most successful models ever' - I dont define tyra in those terms - I think there are scores of more famous & successful models. Please post some tyra vogue covers for us??

I can see that the show, not Janice is copying Simon and although I believe that she is really letting her nasty side run wild for the show because that is probably what she has been asked to do. The reason that I say this is because I have seen Janice other than on ANTM and she is much nicer, still crude and tough but nicer than on the show. She just seems very proud of herself and she should be, her life was/is something to be proud of.

Once again, I am not saying that Janice wasn't a big star and a SuperModel. I'm just saying that she shouldn't be telling everyone that she is the "World's First SuperModel." It makes her sounds silly because anybody who is partially informed knows that she was not.

yes tyra has been on the cover of elle. [Im sure a number of times] incl us maybe 2 years ago.
I would say her sports illustrated cover is her greatest magazine moment.
I do not consider her 'one of the most successful models ever.'
[she is one of the more famous VS girls of the last 5 years].
elle magazine may have been hot in the 80s, especially french elle, but us elle has been a joke for years & while I like UK & french elle, its not what it once was. presumably tyra has made the cover of SOME vogue worldwide, but even with that, that dosnt make her the most successful anything.
she has done very well in victoria secret [take that however you like] and her success producing ANTM & her new talk show is possibly her most impressive accomplishment.
her singing career [remember that??!!] is not.
much as I hate to categorize models by race, {despite the fashion world being obsessively, overtly race/image-aware} in the african-american category, beverly johnson, Iman, naomi & currently liya are far more successful & famous in high fashion.
other than some good runway shows in the 90s & her fat VS contract, tyra actually wasnt that much of superstar high fashion model, although Im sure her fans [and tyra herself] would dispute that.

I didn't say she/Tyra was the most successful, I said one of the and keep in mind that Tyra is still young and her career is still in full swing so don't discredit her yet, not than she hasn't already done much to prove herself.

Naomi, ha, don't even get me started on that silly twit who "fell" down the runway like a big, clumsy, oxe. Went "naked" rather than wear fur for Peta and then wore a big ugly fur coat down the runway a few weeks later. She is NOT beautiful, in my opinion! I've never seen her appeal, ever.

naomi has so much bigger a fashion career than tyra its no comparison.
tyra may be able to get along with people better [I think!] and she has VS & her TV shows but still, Omi's career dwarfs tyra's [despite Omi's initial insecurity when Tyra appeared].
Im not Omi's biggest fan either but her TRUE supermodeldom is indisputable. and still after all these years- 1990- present- thats amazing! Omi's runway & editorial track record blows tyra away.

I'm not a huge Tyra Banks fan but I do really like her, think she has one beautiful body, is beautiful and is only in the middle of her career. She seems very ambitious and is getting very much more famous with ANTM, so we will see more from her yet, she might just appear on Vogue yet, if she has not already.

You know that Tyra is actually perfectly positioned to transform her career. My hat's off to her, as she's becoming more successful than Naomi in that she's transforming herself from a mere model to a personality that's perhaps bankable in a new and sustainable way, i.e. television. All those parts of ANTM where she talks and 'gets real' with the models? Definitely feels to me like she's gearing up for a talk show career, and who wouldn't want to see her succeed in that? She's beautiful to watch, she's got empathy, and even she knows that her body is too large now to be modelling clothing (she said so herself on the show) (although perfect for popular American modelling o swimwear and underwear with Victoria's Secret & Sports Illustrated) so why not focus on her other, also appealing attributes? She always plays good cop on the show anyway, which is why Janice is perfect because she also makes Tyra look good by playing bad cop.

Personally, I wonder what Janice can do after this show? I imagine she could be a bitchy red carpet correspondent...

Janice was gorgeous and dynamic when she was at her prime, which was roughly 1975-1983, and I think she's still awesome to look at. Her latest plastic surgery has been very good work, I think. 'No life guard on duty' is a fashion industry classic - she is a very good writer IMO - sort of a fashion Nietzsche or Camille Paglia - completely contradictory and incredibly amusing to read. I hope she will be able to curb her demons and write more books, host shows or become an editor of some prominent mag.

She WAS a supermodel all right - even though the term wasn't used in the public until the later 80s. She was on the cover of French Elle, Paris Vogue, British Vogue, American Photo, Cosmo and odd international mags all over the world. She was a fixture at American Vogue from 1976 to about 1980 but she never once made the cover. She landed campaigns with most high fashion designers - though not Armani (funny anecdote in NLGOD about how she calls Giorgio Gianni and misses the opportunity of becoming the face of Armani). Janice was one of the most successful models of the 70s along with Patti Hansen, Janice Dickinson, Kim Alexis, Michelle Stevens, Lauren Hutton, Beverly Johnson, Karen Graham and Gia Carangi.

Now I hate her, she looks really bad...too plastic. I loved it how that guy who styles all the girls in ANTM, the one who dyed his hair grey or whatever, said to her: "If you pull one string from behind your ears, your whole face will fall together" or something like that...
