Jean Pagliuso was born and raised in California. She graduated from the College of Fine Arts at UCLA in 1963. After working as assistant art director at Mademoiselle Magazine in NY and then in office interiors for Morganelli Heumann & Associates in LA, she began a career in photography in 1969. She moved to New York in 1974 and in her thirty year career was published in Seventeen, Mademoiselle, NY Magazine, Italian Harper Bazaar, Vogue, HG, Time, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Men’s Journal, New York Times Magazine “Fashion of the Times”, Italian Vogue, and Interview Magazine. In addition to her work in fashion, she photographed many movie posters most notably White Palace, American Gigolo, Dillinger, Thieves like Us, Three Women, and Splash.

Pagliuso’s attention turned to places of ritual and endangered environments. Pagliuso’s New York exhibition, “Fragile Remains” (2004), presented a series of hand-applied silver gelatin photographs printed on Kaji rice paper that featured landscapes shot in Cambodia, India, New Mexico, Peru and Turkey. She also created a hand-bound, limited edition book that features 23 images divided in two sections: “Rockscapes” and “Waterscapes.” The book, issued in a limited edition of 50 copies and contains photographs digitally printed with archival pigments on rice paper. Pagliuso’s “Fragile Remains” was reviewed in the Village Voice, ARTnews, The New York Times, and Camera Arts. Both the “Fragile Remains” book and exhibition are the fruit of many years of labor and serve as a vivid reminder of the role of the past in our present.

Pagliuso’s recent series is a suite of strictly formalized portraits of poultry. Her current work, “The Poultry Suite”, though seemingly uncharacteristic of her previous shows, beautifully integrates this unique subject matter with her 30 years of formal portraiture.

Pagliuso today lives in New York and Santa Fe with her husband Tom Cohen and daughter Jesse.
