China makes Debut at Paris Fashion Week

(source: Yahoo!)

PARIS (AFP) - Frankie Xie, the first Chinese designer to unveil a collection as part of Paris fashion week, opened the eight-day style extravaganza.

Jefen, the label he established in Beijing in 2000, offered a youthful spring-summer 2007 women's collection largely adapted to reflect Western styles with Chinese touches.

"We use a lot of Chinese technology such as hand embroidery, Chinese fabrics or Chinese silk. The prints are Chinese designs," the 46-year-old said, after the show Sunday, speaking through an interpreter.

Hand-painted motifs of peach tree flowers in peachy hues and raspberry prettily adorned long and short dresses.
But navy and white stripes on a silk-satin dress kicked off the collection that also featured baby-doll dresses, hot pants, striped leggings, mannish trousers and baggy short dungarees.
Bows, braces and little puff sleeves added cuteness.

David Bowie's 1980s hit "China Girl" as part of the show's backing track seemed aimed at symbolizing the blend of this fashion house's Western-oriented wardrobe with a proud Chinese identity.

"We were targeting European consumers, maybe of more than 25 years old, 30 years old, who are interested in Eastern culture and above all Chinese culture," Xie said.

Entitling his collection "The Door", the designer said he had chosen the theme to represent Chinese fashion opening up to the world. He owns about 20 shops in China but has plans to open outlets in Europe.
"Everyone now knows that China has the production but they don't know that it has the design," Xie added.

Didier Grumbach, the president of the French Couture Federation, said recently that he believed Xie's appearance on the official calendar of Paris fashion week would have "an enormous impact in China".

China's Ambassador to France, Jinjun Zhao, attended the catwalk show which got Paris' ready-to-wear collections underway, following hard on the heels of Milan, London and New York.

A bit too obviously derivative for me..... but some cute pieces.

Thanks for posting the pics.

I quite like it!

Thanks for posting.

Yes! have been waiting for this. Thnx for posting.

they are going to sell very well in Beijing, IMHO. A little better made plus international exposure, now everybody will head to the shopping center to get a piece from the collection. it's a big step forward for the mainland designers.

It's nice, but it's rather...H&M-looking for my tastes.

Maybe a bit better than H&M, but definitely not something that should be presented in Paris, and even to be considered as a China fashion's debut in Paris. What a shame it's this guy who did the very first Paris fashion show by mainland China designer! From what I have seen so far in this thread, he really realy doesn't have much talent. Don't understand why he didn't choose New York to do his show, at least there are always lots of crappy collections in New York, and he wouldn't make his stuff such an embarassment from every Chinese fashion lover if this were done in New York:ninja:.

As far as I know, there are a lot more rich Chinese people to place clothes orders in Paris and Milan than in New York. From a business perspective, Paris is a better location.

I LOVE that long white evening gown with the floral print on it-there's a lot going on in this, I'm getting a sort of retro vibe from some things but overall not bad.

Maybe, but this is still such a boring mishmash of everything. Like susie_bubble said, it's so obviously derivative, and derivative in such a bland and random way.

from the western perspective, probably yes. But the Chinese market is very different. Personally I don't like the fashion scene there but when you consider a market with 1.5 billion people, it's strong enough to form a unique market that has unique taste. The collection is probably awkward to people here, but at the same time, YSL and McQueen probably look awkward over there. I think that the designer is just trying to make the trends work within a Chinese context, and so he added his own interpretation. I don't expect him to be the Chinese Yohji Yamamoto, because it takes time and certain environment to create such a talent. The one thing I really like is that he uses all the fabric from China and patterns from China. This alone is interesting to me already. I'm very forgiving on the design at this moment. :flower:
