Joan Rivers "is not a racist"

After reading that article, Howe definitely did put words in her mouth. I'd be pissed too! Good for her for standing up for herself!

Agreed. He seems like the problem - not her.

That was just weird.

"Racist" is defnitley a word that gets thrown around way too easily.

well she was accused by darcus howe- who is well known for not having the most balanced views on race (serious chip on his shoulder)- i quite admire joan for standing up to him- he's rather intimidating...

I read this in the paper this morning, he seemed to be in the wrong and jumping to conclusions...I would have reacted the same if I'd been accused of such a thing.

Though I can understand her anger, I can see his point too. You can't really say "I'm so bored of race" when we all know there is still racism in the world. As an example, just last week, I overheard racist comments in my classroom, which made it an unhappy place for me to be. By saying that, she ignore what is still happening. Though I know nothing about Howes, I think if he has 'a chip on his shoulder' it is understandable.

^ Even though I see your point, Joan's comments weren't at all derogatory towards anybody. If anything she has a very open minded approach to race, that it's basically insignificant.

Anyway, this Howe guy really does seem to have a chip on his shoulder, to be able to twist her words so severely. I mean, I didn't take what she said to be mildly racist, so it's clear he's just way too sensitive about it.

^I guess its almost as if her comments were patronising and too simplistic. Its very easy to say what she did but it doesn't give it any relevance.

Yea, because saying that people should inter marry is really racist:rolleyes:

^That's made me think...I hate the phrase 'inter-marry'. Its not like we different species or something. And 'half-caste'...Seems so old-fashioned now. Obviously not to some people, as an British teenager, Anthony Walker was murdered for having a white girlfriend only a few months ago.

^ haha, you do have a point there.

But yet, people usually do marry others of similar race.

I'm half Syrian and have always found race a funny thing, how something so abstract can cause so many problems.

I see both their points..race shouldn't be a big deal..but it undeniably is, is it not? Sad but true. It seems like Howe thought Rivers was brushing off something that (obviously) is important to him. I'm not offended by what she said...but I think the timing is what made it such a bruhaha...

I don't think he called her a rascist.. I listened to the interview and Joan was saying how she doesn't believe people should deal with race and should stop talking about it, which I personally think is easy to say only when you've probably never been the target of rascist actions or comments, and then Howe then said something about using the term "Carribean children" since "Black offends joan".. which I think he meant since Joan didn't want to talk about race... I think it was dumb of Howe to include Joan in that comment... but I don't think he was calling her a rascist... he eventually went on to say it was a "language problem" and trying to soothe the situation.. but yes.. people get really defensive when a percieved rascist allegation occurs.. understanbly...

Just a BIG misunderstanding between the two... both could have handled the situation much better..

^ Oh.

Well then that's a total different story.`

I just knew it made no sense for him to jump to such a conclusion.

well, joan is jewish, so i'm sure that she's felt prejudice in her life. you don't have to be a different race, gender, ethnicity, or religion to feel discriminated against. . . you just have to be different when there is plenty of ignorance around.

Well personally I agree with her , even if it's not very realistic, and I deffinetly don't see how it is racist at all.

I agree with you completely, but I think from reading the article Joan meant it as saying "I wish it weren't an issue...like why can't we all get along?" That's pretty damn idealistic...but I don't think she deserved to be called a racist.
