From style.com's review: "...he toured the States, where he learned about American customers from retailers..."
"...his long evening dresses have a new raison d'être as eventwear for American women who like to feel pretty..."

I actually find this collection quite uninspiring, one of the shows I was actually looking forward to seeing..

here is the full review from style.com:

LONDON, February 16, 2006 – Jonathan Saunders did a couple of very smart things while he was designing his fall collection. One, he took pattern-cutting lessons; and two, he toured the States, where he learned about American customers from retailers. Before he even settled on a concept—which was influenced by Peggy Guggenheim's 1940's art collection—that back-study gave him the technical and mental advantages to make a breakthrough with this line.

A prodigiously talented print designer with a fine-art background, Saunders has developed an increasingly sophisticated handwriting. He engineers pattern and shading—in this collection, graphic lines, blocks, and schematic feather prints—to edge hems and the tips of scarves, and to lend trompe l'oeil effects to fluttering panels that seem to merge into the body of dresses. The show's black, white, and gray scheme was inspired by an odd collision of modernism and surrealism (and particularly by Elsa Schiaparelli's famous Tear dress), but that's not what really matters. Saunders can now cut a dress that not only shows off his prints, but also looks great on a body. More than that, his long evening dresses have a new raison d'être as eventwear for American women who like to feel pretty, but with an edge.

Love it. The prints are very eye-catching, and a really like the cut.

He's done well to turn off the technicolor kaleidescope prints he was doing before. These show off the shape and motifs much better and he'll certainly gain more ground with new customers.
Liking the deco prints.

oooh I love it! all of it! the prints are gorgeous, they make me think of Metropolis and film noir.

Can't make objective judgement on this, cos I generally don't like black. (I think I like the previous collection more.)
But good colour combination of the dresses & the background.

Some of the black and white prints are a bit jarring. The deco references are nice as are the subtly shaded dove grey pieces. Definitely an improvement from S/S06 though.

Better than he did before with the awful colour bolocking, but for some reason, he always comes across as somewhat conventional in his cut and shape. He has definitely been doing the American silhouette, if not for some of the outstanding prints, this easily looks like one of the hundreds of NYFW shows.

I love it. Even though black and white prints are very stark, these are so lovely.

What a cool collection! I love the top Caroline is wearing! Im usually not into london fashion week, but this is nice! The prints are nice and I love the contstruction!

I was watching the Scottish Style Awards a couple of days ago(they were filmed in September 05) and Jonathan won Designer of the Year!

best collection he has ever done...

i agree that his prints are more impressive in a monochromatic palette...

i think this is the best collection he's done too... for the first time the clothes look like they were considered...
