JULIA HAFSTRÖM
Julia Hafstrom’s copper locks and idyllic, fanciful beauty seem fairy-tale born. Features that furnished a continually steadfast career. A feat considering the model landscape: a game of chairs buoyed by an industry penchant for newer-and-nower girls. But from her Prada runway debut way back – she was just a fresh faced Swede in 2008 – and her first shoot with Steven Meisel to her recent Gucci campaign shot by Glen Luchord, Julia’s titian tinge and rare angles regularly captivate top photographers. Equally alluring back when Thom Jackson captured Hafstrom in the rolling landscape of Marfa for Models.com, Hafstrom is this time around captured by Van Sarki. The team keeps things bright and fresh working in plenty of pastel for this airy story. Since this is Julia’s sophomore MDX, Models.com wanted to get a little more familiar. Read her interview below.

Since it’s topical–Meisel leaving Vogue Italia–How was working with the him?
It was a very cool experience for me, my first job ever in New York was shooting Italian Vogue with him. Such an amazing introduction into the fashion world. I remember being nervous before the shoot, but when we started shooting I was so focused that the nerves went away. He knows what he wants and to be apart of his work is very rewarding.
What’s the most spectacular show you’ve walked and what sticks in your mind about it?
Louis Vuitton FW14 show. I was exclusive for it so it was super cool seeing the collection get made. It was my first show in a few years so I remember it well. It took me a minute to get the runway down cause it was a bit complicated, but it made it more fun.
Any stories from the Gucci pre-fall campaign shoot with Glen Luchford? Were you ecstatic to land it?
I was really happy to get that job. When my booker first told me I thought she gave me the wrong schedule, but then my name was on the ticket to London so I packed my bag straight away. I admire Glen Luchford’s work so it was a thrill to get to work with him.
If you had to wear only one designer who would it be?
Céline I think. I always feel cool in Céline.
When traveling what the five items you must bring?
Apart from clothes I’d say comfortable shoes, face cream, phone, a book to read, pens and a book to write and draw in.
Okay, today: no castings, no bookings, no travel, nothing–what would your day off be like?
I draw, knit, listen to music, go for long walks, watch movies and I take the time to clean my apartment.
What about advice to your 16 year old self? Advice to your future self?
I’d say don’t stress to both my past and future self, it’s important I think. Most things work out in the end.
What’s something you haven’t achieved but hope to?
I’d like to live on a secluded piece of land that I take care of myself, where I can grow my own vegetables and flowers and breath in fresh air everyday.
What’s your favorite / most memorable direction a photographer has ever given to you?
I did a shoot in the forest once and I got to run around an pretend I was in a different world. The direction was run around, it was like being a kid again.
What’s the first thing you do when you arrive in a foreign country? Do you ever act like a tourist?
It depends what time of day it is, but I usually go for a walk to get a feel of the city I’m in. Ive done touristy things for sure, but it’s not the first thing I’ll do in a new place.
