Julia Nobis says modelling's just a means to an end with a career as a doctor her main aim

JULIA Nobis would prefer to fly under the radar, although it's not an easy ask from a woman who is arguably Australia's top high fashion international model.

She's started the year with a bang, gracing the cover of the prestigious Italian Vogue and landing two major campaigns for Dior and Celine with a number of others yet to be announced.

"I look like a homeless boy most of the time, which is good," Nobis told Confidential. "I suppose being really tall and thin, it sets you apart visually from everyone so I tried to go the opposite way and blend in to my surroundings."

Nobis, 21, is officially ranked at number 17 on the list of the world's top 50 models and is tipped to make the top 10 over the coming months, earning well over a million a year.

Having grown up in Sydney's Bondi area and signed to Priscilla's Model Management locally, Nobis is based in New York where she is represented by DNA Models.

Scoring her first Italian Vogue cover is a major coup and elevates Nobis to a new level.

"I always get really weird about good things happening, I always try and downplay it," she said. "It is prestigious. People see that and see you at a different level so it is really good to be on the cover of Italian Vogue."

Nobis is studying a Bachelor of Science and Applied Science part time remotely through Melbourne's RMIT with the aim of becoming an ER doctor.

She's got four years to go on the degree.

"Modelling never was my end goal," she said. "I get paid to study basically. I get paid better than your average uni student that's for sure. I kind of fell into modelling and stuck with it."
