The 23 year old Julia Stegner is known in the fashion scene as the German export product. Airs and graces? Absolutely none. Naturally shining she charms in the GALA-interview
Gala: Fashion week is about to start, does Berlin convince you as fashion capitol?
It’s a great initiative. I would think it’s amazing to come more often to my country Germany to work.
Gala: So you would walk the runway in Berlin?
Of course, immediately.
really???
Gala: Do you know Berlin well?
Actually not. But I have a friend there, who I visit. Berlin is a great city, that vibrates, is young and attracts a lot of artists. To me Berlin is the New York of Germany.
Gala: Are there certain places that you really like?
I don’t know the city that well, but I like Prenzlauer Berg (the artistic district in Berlin) and the legendary Badeschiff with a nice pool that has been build in the Spree. Berlin has fascinated me.
Gala: Does it matter to you, whether you work in Germany or anywhere else?
Till now we didn’t have a fashion capitol, so it would be nice if Berlin really turned out to be that. The US have NY, Italy has Milan and in France there’s Paris. Those are the important cities if you want to be a big model. Above all NY, cause the most photographers live here. Germany would make a good start. My agency had me sent to Paris quite early. That was the key to my success.
Gala: You live in the EastVillage. What do you really like about it?
The people are simply nice and relaxed. I especially like Stuyvesant Town, it’s a residential area near the 14th street. There are even table tennis places in the open air.
Gala: Do you play table tennis?
Yes, very passionate! My boyfriend is a very, very good at it, unfortunately I lose to him most of the time, but I’m getting closer. So I wouldn’t call me very bad at it. (laughs)
Gala: Do you feel like you have to look good in everyday life, because you’re a model?
Just a little bit. But I like the natural look, so it’s not a huge effort for me. Just cover the spots a bit, and it’s done. Many believe, as a model you have to look perfect every day. I try to look relaxed.
Gala: You’re often travel by air. How do you cope with the ban on liquids on the airplane?
I bought those little plastic bottles and …(I have no idea how to translate this part
cry:
Gala: Which beauty products do you take with you?
To provide a dried out skin, I need the moisturizing crème of my dermatologist, who makes all of my crèmes, when I travel by air. I always have the “Great Lash” mascara of Maybelline Jade with me. I have to day, I’ve always used that one since I was 13 or 14.
Gala: so it wasn’t hard to decide to become the Maybelline Jade spokesperson?
I’ve grown up with this product, and I’m the first German spokesperson. It’s a big honour. Christy Turlington, who I think is unique, is also part of the team. And the Brazilian topmdel Adriana Lima. And wow, now I’m one of them! A contract like that is the icing on the cake for every model career.
Gala: How do you manage to stay out of the spotlights, unlike Kate Moss?
I’m a normal girl. I’m the same Julia as 5,5 years ago, when I just finished school and started my career. Kate Moss is from the time of the supermodels, perhaps that’s the reason.
Gala: But you do meet exciting people
I do have an exceptional job. It may seem crazy to outsiders, but it isn’t. I love my family, my home and biking with my sister. More than parties.
Gala: Aren’t actors and rockstars standing in line?
(laughs) I do meet a lot of them. But to be honest, it’s not for me.
Gala: So your boyfriend is the assistant of the star photographer Steven Meisel.
I’ve met and fell in love with my boyfriend immediately. it doesn’t matter to me whether he’s a photographer, actor or a construction worker.
Gala: Are you being followed by paparazzi?
No. Sometimes tourists recognize me, and I pose with them, that’s all. I’m not interesting enough for the paparazzi.
Gala: Do people look at your plate to see if you really eat?
I don’t look after that. When they do, they probably think I eat too much. To my food is like culture. I love to be in restaurants with friends, it’s cosy and you can have great conversations.
Gala: Are there any friendships in model business?
Of course. It’s a prejudice that we all hate and b*tch to each other. You like some of them, others you don’t. one of my very best friends is the German topmodel Luca. And I also hang around a lot with Gemma Ward. When I don’t get a job, I’m happy if a friend gets it.
