Model Julia van Os Weighs In on Motorcycles and Miles Teller
Dutch model Julia van Os is ready to make waves. After walking more than 40 shows in her first season and appearing in Fall campaigns for the likes of Calvin Klein Jeans and Alexander McQueen, Van Os is a rising star worth learning more about. Here, the fresh face breaks it down in her own words.
Finishing high school was more important to her than breaking into fashion.
“I signed myself up for a modeling contest in CosmoGirl with a friend when I was thirteen years old. It was honestly more of a joke; I didn’t expect anything to come from it. To my surprise I won, and that’s how I came into contact with my mother agency, Future Faces, in Amsterdam. However, I really did not want to start modeling until after I had graduated high school, which is why I’ve only recently started full time.”
She’s handy with a sewing machine.
“I don’t think I was that interested in fashion [before modeling], but I’ve always liked clothing. I could get lost in a good vintage store for hours. I also liked designing and making my own things, like dresses on the sewing machine. I was always busy turning my jeans into shorts, cutting and dyeing my T-shirts, that kind of stuff.”
If you see her on the back of a motorcycle, don’t tell her agents!
“I had a driver in Milan, and sometimes when I was in a big hurry to go from show to show, he would show up on his motorcycle instead of in his car, to avoid traffic. We didn’t tell my agency! They don’t want the models to go on motorcycles because it’s too dangerous. So we’d secretly go racing through the city all day on the motorcycle. That was a lot of fun!”
Modeling has taught her not to take things too seriously.
“You just have to shake all of that off. If you take every ‘no’ that you get personally, you will absolutely torture yourself. Of course, it’s good to be motivated and dedicated, but you also have to take a step back now and then, to get everything into perspective. If I start to freak out about something, I always try to think: In a year from now, this probably won’t matter and I’ll be laughing about it.”
Celebrity crush?
“Miles Teller.”
If she could raid anyone’s closet?
“That would have to be FKA twigs’s.”
If she could meet one person from any era?
“Stephen Hawking.”
She may have a slight coffee addiction.
“My biggest vice is probably drinking way too much coffee at any given point—that or overindulging in chocolate!”
Next big purchase?
“Right now I want a nice big cashmere sweater because it’s cozy and always timeless.”
To borrow from Proust, her idea of perfect happiness?
“Happiness is waking up on a Sunday morning to have breakfast in your pj’s with the people you love.”
This heavenly Dutch beauty has an all-purpose allure that, in a short time, gained her some serious runway miles. Vogue Paris, British Vogue and Vogue Japan all have shot her while McQueen, Moncler and Calvin Klein Fall 2105 campaigns adds clout to her demand.
