I did not follow her career during her heyday cause I was a kid but I remember finding out about her as a teenager, in maybe the directory of models style.com used to have back in the day cause I used to look up every model and I remember looking her up and learning right away that she.... had a loose screw. It never crossed my mind for a second to do further research or give her the benefit of the doubt. She was depicted as mentally ill, crazy, troubled, someone who got dizzy with fame and fortune and I kind of identified her as that model since. I dived into the first half of this thread a couple days ago and it's the recurrent narrative, brought up by members every other page, and it makes me so sad and a bit guilty even though we didn't really know what was going on at the time...
Even years after she was locked up for months at the hands of her abusers, she had an incident where she allegedly threatened to attack her plastic surgeon after he did not reverse a procedure and again, it solidified the idea that she was 'crazy', but knowing what we know now, I wonder if there was any validity to her claim..
I would not be surprised either if she wants nothing to do with the industry but I wish the new designers and newer agencies embraced her and gave her the space and recognition she deserves now more than ever.. she wasn't just looks, the way she went about it was so bold and brave for her time, she gave so many women a voice and she paid a really high price for that. 💔
