Karl has been doing a menswear line ever since he broke off from RICHMONT , of Switzerland , the luxury vehicle of the South African RUPERT family ( the second biggest fashion conglomerate in the world , after LVMH ) which owns luxury labels like Cartier , Dunhill , and particularly to the point , ' CHLOE , for whom Lagerfeld designed , on-and-off from the early 70s to the late 90s .
They backed his own , LAGERFELD label for women along with the diffusion line , KL by Karl Lagerfeld . Karl also did menswear collections for CORNELIANI in the 80s/90s - very 20s - 30s in feel , the typical creations of a ' stylist ' , rather than a ' designer ' .
When Richmont withdrew their backing , Karl started his small-scale LAGERFELD GALLERY line , with new financing , a venture selling clothes , books , objets d' art , etc. For this gallery , he does both a women's line and a men's line , but the latter was only sold on a small scale from his HQ showroom on Rue Vivienne in Paris , with very few stockists throughout the world , ( perhaps including the Lagerfeld boutique in SAKS Fifth Avenue ? ) .

I have some back copies of Uomo Collezioni , with photo features on his Lagerfeld Gallery for men collections , and I've even got some old footage on video , recorded from FTV , with shots of different outfits being modelled and displayed in his showroom , A/W 02/03 I think .
Needless to say , the menswear is very ' safe ' compared to his womenswear , as , personally , I don't think that menswear is Karl's forte . It's rather like the menswear collection he did for H&M , with a slim and youthful silhouette but much more forgiving than DIOR HOMME !!!
It is definitely Slimanesque ( natch ) , but uses tweed much more than his ' buddie Hedi ' !!!
Perhaps , having sold out to the Hilfiger conglomerate Dame Karla will be persuaded to become a little more adventurous in his men's designs .
BTW , I even remember a small collection for men that Karl did for CHLOE in the middle 70s . It was quite adventurous , with batwing sleeved jackets , beautiful silk shirts printed with Italian scenes , and a marvellous trenchcoat , that I've always regretted not buying ,

' the collection being only on sale in London at those bastions of good taste , BROWNS of South Molton Street and Piero de Monzi of the Fulham Road .
But enough of my ramblings .
