(NEW YORK) Think Fashion Week's all fancy clothes and fun? In The Daily's latest blog installment, new IMG model Reid takes us through the ins and outs of her first New York show season.

My name is Reid I am 18 years old. I grew up in Calgary, Canada, and that's where I still live. In my free time I like to go skiing in the winter and to our cabin at Gull Lake in the summer for wakeboarding and water sports. I love reading so I always try to have a book with me, especially for long wait times at castings. And of course, like every other girl, I love shopping!
This is my first show season and first time really working in New York; I hope it’s really successful, but we will see what happens. I started modeling with IMG just before Christmas when my agent, Kelly Streit from Mode Models back home, showed them some pictures of me. I came to New York before Christmas for a week to meet everyone at the agency and do a couple of photo shoots for my portfolio; before that, I had done some modeling in Canada, and I went to London for a little while in the summer.
This isn't my first time away from home. I'm used to traveling on my own and with friends, so I am used to being away from my family. I do still miss them, especially my boyfriend, but it isn't all that hard being away from them as I am only ever a plane ride away.
The trip to New York was quite long. Usually, it would only take 4 hours, but after a snowfall in Dallas, flights were cancelled it ended up taking 12 hours to get from Calgary to new York, which also meant having my luggage spend the night in Dallas without me. But it all ended well and I got my luggage the next day so it wasn't a problem.
While in New York, I am living at the IMG model apartment with six other girls. It is in a good location for getting around to castings and our agency, which makes our days a little easier. Al of my roommates are really easy to get along with. They are all IMG girls in the development section like me (Irina Z., Marina S., Julie M., Leigh P., and Shanay H.) and one of them is even from Canada (Madeleine B.). Everyone is really different, but we all seem to get along and have a good time together. We even have similar tastes for TV shows, which is good since we only have one TV. We all get along really well and seem to have similar personalities that work really well together. No cat fights in this apartment! The only time it's a little hard is trying to find enough time for everyone to shower, but we seem to work it out.
It's not that hard for me to eat healthy. I don't really have a favorite fast food—I pretty much like it all—but I just try to avoid it and have it only once and a while. I do, however, have a weakness for chocolate, so I give in to that sometimes. I don't avoid sweets and fast food because of modeling; I have tried to do it to be more healthy. Of course I am like any other person and I do crave it sometimes, but I just try to not make it a habit because I feel better when I don't eat it. If I do go somewhere like McDonald’s, I try to get their healthy choice items, such as a salad or yogurt cup instead.
When I say I try to get as much sleep as I can, it means I shoot for at least 8 hours, but that doesn't always happen. Living with 6 other girls means that everyone is getting up and going to bed at different times, so going to bed early and sleeping in doesn't always happen. Basically, what it comes down to is that I LOVE sleep—my favorite thing on the weekends is sleeping in. Sometimes I’m tempted to stay up late or go out, but I don't usually do it before I have to work because I’ll be too tired to do well at a shoot or a casting; I would much rather watch a movie at home so that I feel good the next day.
At the gym, I start with cardio, then do the machines for arms and legs as well as free weights and sit-ups. If there is an abs class or Pilates class being offered at the time, that I get to the gym then I go to that as well but usually the gyms schedule and mine don't quite work out. I had a trainer a while ago so she coached me on how to stay lean but try to gain muscle which is what I try to do. I don't ever want to have big muscles but I do like being toned and staying fit because I feel better when I work out. Of course like anyone it goes in spurts, and sometimes I find a lot of time to work out; and then there are those weeks that when you get home late and all you want to do is relax, so I just take it day by day...
During the week I have been going on anywhere from 5—15 castings a day. Each day is different, with some days a lot busier than others. Some days the castings are really spread out, so I am not in a rush from one casting to the next, but others it's a matter of planning your day right so that you can make it to all of your castings on time. For the most part I go alone to castings because every model has her own schedule, which are usually quite different, but whenever I can I try to go with my roommates so that I have someone to talk to while we’re waiting or on the train—it just makes the whole day that much more fun. I take the train to get to most of them, and use taxis from time to time, like when I’m running late or it’s really cold out.
So far, I have been to a lot of show castings, but I also went to meet Delois from Steven Miesel's office, which was exciting. I haven't heard yet how that meeting went, but I hope that she liked me. I have also met Miss Jay from America's Next Top Model, which was funny because I didn't really expect to see him at a casting (it was for Baby Phat). For the most part, castings are going really well. I seem to be getting a really good response and I feel really good leaving most of them. Of course, how many and which shows I get will sort of be an idea of how well things have actually been going. Lisa at IMG has been telling me that they have been getting really good feedback from clients as well, so it seems promising.
