Kate Winslet

MOMENTS IN THE SUN Winslet's performance in Little Children (with Patrick Wilson) had her basking in the glow of Oscar speculation again after the film's premiere

Winslet isn't one to join in the chorus of complaints about the lack of layered roles for women in Hollywood. [See Hollywood vs. Women] ''I don't have the right to criticize the way a woman is portrayed in film, purely because I've had the opportunity to play so many great parts,'' she says. (What really incenses her is when she reads a mediocre script that has studio backing. ''I cannot understand how on earth this got funding when you could make three decent British films with this money!'') And when she feels queasy about her own shelf life, the generation of women above her provides sustenance. ''I look to people like Meryl Streep and Judi Dench and Helen Mirren and just think, As far as I can tell, none of you have had any surgery,'' says Winslet. ''You all look amazing. And you're all working and being better than ever!''
At last month's Toronto film festival, Winslet, who was promoting Little Children, reunited with Emma Thompson, who was plugging the comedy Stranger Than Fiction. In between junkets, the two old friends met in Winslet's hotel room for lunch and a quick gab. ''She turned up and went, 'I'm not going to stay for long, but I want to make sure you eat!''' remembers Winslet. ''She said, 'I ordered sushi, salad, and a pudding of some kind. Did you order the pudding?' And I said 'No, no, I didn't.' And she said, 'Why didn't you order the pudding?! It looks delicious!'''
After the premiere of Little Children, another gust of Oscar talk started to swirl around Winslet's performance. There's something refreshing about a famous actress who doesn't natter on insincerely about her dumb luck. Winslet fondly remembers the 1997 Academy Awards when Frances McDormand accepted the Oscar for Fargo. ''She just strutted up there,'' she says. ''It was almost like a performer going up there to take the podium. 'It's my turn!' She didn't make any apologies.'' Winslet likewise isn't the type to feel apologetic for her achievements. ''I work really, really hard, so I feel incredibly proud of my nominations. And I feel very proud of the fact that I'm [one of] the youngest who's ever gotten that many. That's amazing! I'll be able to tell my grandkids that when I was that age, that happened to me. Wow! Yes, Kate, well done.''

Remember those Baftas?

Kate Winslet looks none too pleased at having to squelch her way up the red carpet.

^^ Can't blame her, I'd be bitter if I got all dressed up only to have to wade through inches of sudsy water.

Thanks for that interview. God could she be any more fabulous? se has to win an oscar soon, she has to!! How do actresses as annoying and crap as Gywneth & Julia Roberts each have one and Kate doesn't?

I love that she and Emma Thompson are still friends. I think they'd be fabulous to hang around with.

She's amazingly beautiful. Just amazingly beautiful, her skin glows in person. It amazes me that they talk about her weight constantly. She's such a small person but I suppose in Hollywood anyone who isn't Nicole Richie is told they need to slim down.

canuckcutie I agree that Jennifer Connelly was looking a bit drawn in the Little Children, she was much thinner than I'd ever seen her before and the hair was off. I think it was (at least in portions of the film) a wig. Kate was radiant by comparison. I agree she'll be getting an Oscar nod for this. Her performance was excellent as usual. You can see how much love and effort she puts into her craft onscreen every single time.

I love that there is always something slightly quirky about her clothes. She goes classic but there's always this really great twist. She's such a down to earth, real woman, I love it.

Yeah in person I'd say Kate looked thin or average sized, all this plus sized, curvy business is just nonsense. Sure if you stuck her next to Kate bosworth or Nicole Richie she'd look big in comparison but only because they are so underweight.

Could be that Jen was wearing a wig but she has such beautiful hair why would they do that? I'm not sure if the combo of the thinness and the severe hair was on purpose as she's the driven career woman whereas Kate's character is softer, dowdier and less concerned with her appearance.

I couldn't find that in stores and I looked in a few! :/ I kept finding the Kirsten Dunst cover everywhere and I sure as hell didn't want that one!!

LOVE HER!!

I'm watching Titanic again for the first time since I was about 14 and I never noticed how gorgeous the clothes are! Kate's costumes are amazing and she looks great with red hair. She's had such an incredible career.

You're all right to, she deserves an Oscar--way more than Gwynth-snore-Paltrow!
