Kate Winslet goes up in the world - literally - in daring New York rooftop photoshoot

She complains that no one believes she is a working-class girl . . . so what better way to prove it than working with steel girders? But Kate Winslet didn’t exactly look dressed for a tough construction shift when she was pictured amid the rooftops of New York last week.
In a slinky little black dress and stylish four-inch heels, the Oscar-winner posed for a series of shots for fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar, reminiscent of the famous Lunchtime Atop A Skyscraper photograph of grubby Thirties builders eating lunch hundreds of feet above the city streets.
Although the finished image exudes glamour, getting into position was a little more awkward, as the 33-year-old had to clamber up a ladder in her stockinged feet before an assistant followed with the black slingbacks. She then changed into a pinstripe jacket and Bridget Jones-style big knickers for other photographs – clearly keen to avoid the problem of ‘builder’s bum’.
Other poses saw her in a tight-fitting raincoat with fishnet stockings and a one-shouldered white gown. Last week Miss Winslet, who now lives in New York with husband Sam Mendes, complained that her refined accent meant she was seen as middle-class, even though her parents struggled to pay the bills while she was growing up in Reading, Berkshire.
‘People think I’m lying,’ she said as she spoke of a director who refused to believe her background. ‘He went, “I hope you’re not as dishonest in your work as you are about your own life.” I was shocked.’ She said her father was a struggling actor who made ends meet by working as a postman, for a road-laying firm and as a van driver.
Miss Winslet has had trouble with previous magazine shoots. Last year Vanity Fair had to apologise after the anti-fur actress was ‘misled’ into posing on a real fur rug. And in 2003 she objected when GQ magazine manipulated a photograph to give her longer legs and a thinner body.
