Carnage is a pessimistic film, but the ending has a glimmer of hope. It is not an easy solution?
Yasmina Reza: My piece, from which the film is based, actually ended in a very black. The will to change the ending comes from the same Roman to give a positive message to new generations.
Kate, you play movies often the subject of the family. Is one of your specific interest in making career choices of this kind?
Kate Winslet: When you are parents and you come from a big family issues and family dynamics these stories are particularly interesting. When Roman approached me and offered me to participate in the film, I immediately accepted. To Roman I did not say no, plus the play, which I saw at the theater in New York is fantastic, so I was very happy with the proposal.
How did you feel you know that you wanted to Roman Polanski in his film?
John C. Reilly: Like Kate I too have been very fortunate to be chosen. When Roman Polanski calls to an actor it's like flying. This is a precious story. It's been very busy closed for six weeks in an apartment.
Christoph Waltz: It's exciting to be contacted by Roman and even more exciting to work in a film written by Yasmina Reza, but after the excitement has run out, we concentrated on the project.
Working on a film with great ability and Polanski as a talented colleague so it is easier or more difficult for an actor?
Kate Winslet: On the set we all got along from the first day of practice. We were nervous about working with the great Roman Polanski, but this fear has brought us together and found work in a similar way. We shared the same ideas, we talked a lot, we were a group of friends and this was the real value of the company. Roman told us it was the first time he had to lead a team so united, free from jealousies and rivalries.
Kate, how you shot the scene more fun than the movie, one where you have nausea and vomiting on the table of hosts?
Kate Winslet: I can not go into details, but it was a scene very technical. During the tests with colleagues I laughed like crazy. The day of shooting I had a suit that made me look like Barbarella and technicians on the set helped me a lot, even if all the women who have experienced pregnancy knows how it feels. I had kept in the mouth for a long time, a poultice of mashed bananas and table scraps. It was a recipe given by Roman. But now I'd rather move on to lift the tone of conversation.
John, you are the voice of comic films. How did you the appropriate role?
John C. Reilly: Maybe soon I'll feel sick because I also have agitated for the presentation of the film and I have jet lag. But I do not think I have the only comic role in the film. And the play which is very entertaining. I have only tried to be the most natural and realistic as possible. The experience that the four share, in fact, is tragic. The comic aspects are secondary.
Kate, since the film is played very physical and did you prepare differently from the usual?
Kate Winslet: I have no formula to prepare for a job. I reflect on the role and that's it. In my opinion this film is a story of complex and detailed. My main concern was to be be more fun Hope Davis (the interpreter of the stage version). When I realized that my work was different from that play I put aside the anxiety.
The stage of the film is very special, as you recite all the time in one room. What signs directing you have been given? How did you work with Roman on the set?
Christoph Waltz: We worked in a small area around us was full of people and equipment. The use of space has been studied in a precise, minimalist, but detailed. Roman is very skilled in accuracy and attention to detail. We we had to follow his directions and I liked it a lot.
Kate Winslet: When we arrived the first day on set we had no idea of how it would work. We started rehearsing as if we were in the theater. Every movement, every detail has been mapped. It took some time to get used to, but then we liked. By the way we shot the film in chronological order.
John C. Reilly: The movements of the film reflect the changes of the characters and so thorough a job with a less skilled director would definitely put us in difficulty, but Roman is really extraordinary. We were very lucky.
