Pete & Jordan: The naked truth
PETER ANDRE has revealed he and Katie Price signed a pre-nup agreement before marrying – and that it was
HIM who insisted on it to protect
HER money.
The glamour girl — who shot to fame as Jordan — has forged a business empire worth millions, taking in everything from modelling to writing to launching her own range of lingerie.
In an exclusive Sun interview, Peter reveals: “As soon as Kate accepted my marriage proposal I made it clear I wanted to sign a pre-nup. There was one reason and one reason only — so Kate would always know that I loved her for her and wasn’t after any cash if things went wrong.
At first, she was like, ‘Why do we need one? Do you think we’re going to split up?’
“I said, ‘No, but now you’ll never ever have it in your mind that I’m only with you for your money.’ I didn’t want to give people any reason to ever say that to her.”
But the twist in the tale is that Katie, 28, reveals the cash deal doesn’t matter any more — as her pop star husband, who has had several No1s and toured the world, is actually making as much money as she is.
She says: “I know people sometimes say things like, ‘I bet Pete ponces off her.’
“But he owns a nightclub and property in Cyprus and Australia and he has his own successful music career. Actually, you’d think he could take me shopping once in a while!”
Peter, 33, adds: “Since we got married last year both our careers have done well.
“I may only do two or three things at once, compared to ten for Kate, but we’ve both been very successful . . . touch wood. We’re both now financially secure but I’m glad we signed a pre-nup, just so she always knows how I feel.”
The couple also revealed the secret to their strong bond — a good argument.
At a time when many showbiz relationships are on the rocks, they say bickering actually helps to keep them strong.
They rib each other in our chat on everything from the merits of curvy women against skinny ones (he prefers more “meat”) to who is cooking the roast potatoes for Christmas dinner (it’s her recipe, so she is).
And that’s just the way they like it.
Katie says: “Every time people see us on TV, even on something like This Morning, we bicker and argue. We’re just so used to the cameras that we are completely ourselves. We’re not putting on an act.
“You get other celebrity couples who don’t seem real. You’re always thinking, ‘Is it going to last or isn’t it?’
“But we do normal, everyday things and people can relate to that. It’s called being grounded and that’s important to us.”
But is it difficult looking after children Junior, one, and four-year-old Harvey — her son by footballer Dwight Yorke — on top of their very hectic day jobs?
Peter says: “We’re not trying to say we’re miracle workers. We do have a nanny and people to look after the house.
“But we try to do as much as we can and we’re not the type to go home and sit on the couch while someone else does the work. We like to get our hands dirty.
“Money can’t buy normality — you have to do the simple things to achieve that.”
Katie jokes: “That’s right. And as long as Peter continues to cook, clean, rub my feet and make me cups of tea, then we’ll be OK.”
It has been a bad year for married stars, with the impending divorces of Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills, and Britney Spears and Kevin Federline.
Katie says: “I wasn’t surprised when those two couples split up.
“I know a lot of people who know Heather and they all claim she was always after a rich man.
“They say she’s got a fame hunger. She got her baby out of it and that’s what she tried to do.
“I know it’s rude for me to say all of this as I don’t know her personally, but that’s what people who do have told me. You’d have thought he’d have signed a proper pre-nup.”
Peter has a different point of view. He says: “I was shocked by Paul and Heather’s split. And the reason is because I thought Paul McCartney, being who he is and the success he is, would have known better.
“Instead of blaming her, I think he should have been a little bit smarter with his choice. I’m surprised he allowed himself to get into this situation.”
As for Britney, the couple are massive fans. Katie says: “I feel sorry for her. She has to go through a messy divorce at the same time as raising two young children. I think Britney is a good mum — she just gets a bad Press sometimes. She’s going to make such a great comeback — and I’m totally on her side.” Peter and Katie’s latest venture is a joint one — an album of love duets called A Whole New World, featuring the title track they first sang for Children In Need
Katie is nervous about performing the numbers live. She admits: “It’s all about confidence and I do lack that sometimes when it comes to singing live on stage.
“Pete has been performing for years and his place is on stage singing and dancing
With me, you could put me on stage modelling in my underwear in front of millions and I’d be fine. But ask me to sing and because I’m not used to it, the nerves start.
“We have been doing a few gigs and lots of TV, though, so my nerves are getting much better now.”
Peter laughs and says: “Brilliant isn’t it. So I’m best on stage with a mic and my wife’s best on stage in her knickers!
“In all seriousness, other singers do a duet and you think, ‘Wow, what a beautiful song’ — but you don’t believe in the story. But we mean every word in these songs. We are really in love.”
Katie and Peter have put a lot of time and effort into recording and promoting the album, which is out now — but it will not add anything to their bulging bank balances. All the royalties will go to charities which specialise in helping children — especially ones like Harvey, who was born blind.
Katie says: “I admit that before I had a child with disabilities I wasn’t really aware of what you have to go through.
“It’s only now I’ve had Harvey that I realise. I want to raise awareness and try to help those in a similar situation.”
Peter adds: “We’ve bought each other diamond rings and flashy cars but the perfect Christmas present for us this year would be if everyone goes and gets this album and supports these charities.
“It would make us the happiest couple alive — actually, we are anyway.”
