i'm looking for a satin/satin look kimono, which i can wear out, something like mk is wearing in this pic (one with the dark hair) anyone know where i can get something like this??? I know they can also be called Happi coats. I'm looking for a thigh/mid length number, not an ankle length one.

hmmm u could also get real kimonos instead of sth kimono-inspired..
get a haori (shorter kimono) or childrens kimono and
alter the sleeves a bit (make them narrower maybe?) so that they are wearable :)

try http://www.yamatoku.jp

runner - those are the most beautiful kimonos I have ever seen. amazing colours & fabrics.

i actually have a children's kimono...

my uncle brought it back to me from japan when i was a girl...but it looks great now as a 3/4 jacket...the sleeves are 3/4 too...
i've used it for shoots and it's great...i think that's a fantasic idea...

otherwise why not try some of the vintage stores in your area...i've seen the best ones at vintage stores over here... :flower:

I would soooo wear that guys outfit....is anyone else drooling over his shoes?

I love the idea of wearing a kimono out. I have this book from the late 70s called "Dressing Disco" that has a section on "the thrift shop diso look" and one of the looks shown is a girl in a short kimono, fishnets and high heels. I've always loved that picture. (BTW, the book is REALLY good/bad  )

I'd check out pearlriver.com to see what they have as well as the local thrift.

it looks to me like what marykate is wearing is really just a silk robe you could get from victoria's secret though... :innocent:

i went to the camden rokit today, saw some kimonos and other japanese print robes there, but nothing that i liked. they had some beautiful sunglasses though! im gonna go back for them...but, oh yeah! back to the kimonos...i think i actually may try the victoria's secret site and the others suggested, thanks guys!

Based on a McCall pattern, and easy as can be. Mine was a little more of a challenge due to the texture of the fabric; it is crisp, like an organdie, and had a tendency to bunch and slip and the lumpy bits caused by the machine embroidery made it a little difficult to cut straight and would sometimes make the sewing machine needle slip. Still, I think the overall effort was worth it.

Anyway, my point, if such a beast exists, is that a Yukata type top is easy to make, and a good, simple pattern is cheap and readily available, so if you found some fabric you liked and have basic sewing skills, you can make this for yourself.
